External display over USB-C hub on P1 Gen 2

2019-09-28, 23:11 PM

I have a P1 Gen2 and want to use a multi-port USB-C hub but so far I've bought 2 and not able to get external display over hdmi to work.
USB C Hub, Type C Hub, TOTU 11-in-1
USB C Hub, Type C Adapter, Falwedi 10-in-1

I have used a usb-c to displayport cable and it does work.  I can't get hdmi output from the usb-c hubs however.

Does anyone have recommendations for a compatible USB-C or how to resolve my issue?

thanks

Re: External display over USB-C hub on P1 Gen 2

I'm having a similar issue. P1 Gen2 works perfectly with the built-in HDMI port. usb-c to HDMI cable works fine.

Yet the usb-c hub I got form Amazon (QGeeM 4 in 1) does not work.

When pluging in to the hub, the computer would freeze and once unplug the HDMI everything is back to normal.

Any known working hub?

I can confirm that I have the exact same issue on my P1 Gen 2 using the Ablewe 5 to 1 USB-C adapter (link: https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B07YWWZJ65). The USB ports work perfectly, yet the whole setup freezes once I plug in an external monitor on the HDMI port of the USB-C adapter.

Has anyone figured out yet what causes the problem and how it can be solved?

This sounds like the freeze I was getting with Lenovo's Thunderbolt dock running the latest firmware. If it is indeed the same issue, it seems to be fixed by Nvidia's latest display driver, 442.19.

I did not have the 442.19 driver version yet. I installed it, however, the problem is still not solved.

Characteristics:

- All the three USB 3.0 ports work perfectly and also simultaneously.

- When connecting a monitor via HDMI on the laptop, this works perfectly.

- When connecting a monitor via HDMI on the USB hub, I experience a quick dark screen on the monitor that is already connected (HDMI-Laptop). Display comes back, with the mouse pointer exactly in the middle of the screen, and then freezes.

- In a few cases, I can move the mouse and see it flickering on the monitor (HDMI-Laptop) just before the freeze.

- I can hear the device connected and device disconnected sounds from Windows just a second after plugging the second monitor in and out of the hub.

- Switching USB-C ports has no effect.

- Both monitors are completely functional, switching which of the two monitors is connected to the USB-C hub does not have an effect.

- Monitor type: Samsung SyncMaster 204B (2x), connected via a HDMI-DVI cable.

That still sounds extremely similar to my problem with the Lenovo dock, which more usage showed was not entirely fixed by the new driver. Do your fans also ramp up during the freeze?

SOLVED

In 2021, I still had the same issue.

The problem is the onboard graphics. I disabled the hybrid mode in the BIOS and only use discrete graphics now and my USB-C to HDMI hub works as intended.

Hope this helps someone.

Best regards
