External display while booting?

2008-09-26, 16:03 PM

Surely this can't be this difficult. My W500 is docked in the advanced mini-dock connected by DVI to a 20" monitor. At boot nothing is displayed on the external display. I can't get anything on the external display until after Vista has booted and I have logged in.

How can I see the boot process and the login screen on my external display?

Todd

You need to change the Boot Display in BIOS.

Go into BIOS, (F1 at boot), Config > Display > Boot Display Device and select DVI, should do the trick for you.

All I have is VGA. No DVI. If I hook a VGA cable up all is well but I'd much rather use DVI. It's almost like the computer doesn't know anything about the DVI slot on the dock.

Sorry, I forgot an important point. DVI can only be selected if you also have discrete graphics selected.

This has also been discussed in the T* board here.

That did it. Thanks.

How do you make it stick though? If I boot up with the DVI option selected all is well. If I shutdown and eject from the dock the settings change back to the default. Do you have to switch it each time?

Docking question

2008-11-04, 22:59 PM

Just got me a W500 w/ UXGA screen.  When I dock my W500 (off status) into my advance mini dock which is attach to 1680x1050 external monitor via the digital connector cable and turned it on (mini dockpower switch) I don't get any picture on my LCD screen.  I have to open my W500 lid first before it projects to the LCD screen.  If I close the lid,  my LCD go to sleep.  I have to change the power settings that when lid is close not to sleep or hibernate.  Is there any video settings that I missed or not set up to the way I want it to behave?

All I want to do is to be able to dock my W500 w/ the lid close (on, off, or in sleep mode), turn the dock on, and projects the picture to my external LCD screen.

Please advise.

For it to stick, - DISABLE OS detection for switchable graphics.

It's under the same section where you changed DVI and Discreete settings.

Cheers!
