Fan clicking noise on a new W541

2015-06-06, 14:59 PM

I have been using my new Lenovo ThinkPad W541 for a week, but I have been noticing a clicking noise that is coming from the fan every now and then since the very beginning.

It seems to occur as soon as the fan starts cycling faster. It might probably be worth mentioning that the laptop does not get crazy hot or anything like that. The noise itself is not too loud to become an actual nuisance either. However, to describe at best, it seems as if a small piece of paper or plastic gets between the blades.

If we have other W541 users around, could you please reply and indicate if this indeed normal?

You have a defective laptop. This is not normal behavior. I would look to get it fixed under warranty.

Thank you for your reply. I really want to avoid having to send back another ThinkPad (this would be the third over the past few months). The laptop does not get hot, nor do you really hear the noise unless you actually put your head right next to it. You are only able to hear it clearly, once the fan starts spinning quicker. I have also made an audio recording for you guys to view at the link below.

Is my laptop really defective? I really hope that this is either normal or just my laptop's newness.

Something went wrong with the assembly of the device. From what it seems there are no negative effects yet. However, this may change. For example, if the clicking noise is caused by a loose wire hitting the fan, then it will eventually break and render something dysfunctional.

Your computer is not built as it should be, and whether it is of concern is unknown. If it is not important to be able to use it for a couple more weeks, I would send it in for repair to be safe.

@Shawn3090 Thank you for your input.

In case anyone should be wondering, I am still using the very same machine without any issues whatsoever. After finding and reading through threads from fellow users with a similar description of this issue, I was convinced the sound to be normal.

If you still feel uneasy, do not hesitate and make a telephone call to Digital River. Their friendly staff will definitely help you out and have the unit replaced if indeed faulty.

This sound is probably not normal. I only get this kind of noise with fans that are lacking grease (old fans, or my current fan which I accidentally washed the grease out of). It spins, but wears out the fan faster and can get really annoying in a quiet room.

I'd warranty it when you have a chance.

Thank you for your reply. I really probably should.

Note that this sound may only be heard if you place your ear right next to the fan. I must say that my recording makes it sound far worse than it actually is. The air is cold and the machine becomes slightly hot only when intensively working with graphic editing software.

Could you please confirm that you do not hear any noise besides the moving air on your W-laptop?

Neither my W520 nor my W550s produce a clicking noise. If it's fairly quiet, I suspect it might be something else; usually ungreased fans are fairly loud.

One thing you could try is to use TPFanControl and spin the fan up to the full 5000-6000RPM (set it to manual, level 64) and let it run for a minute. Maybe it will redistribute the grease better. That said, if it is defective, this could just make it worse.

Thank you for clearing that up. I will strongly consider having the unit sent back, but unfortunately I am quite dependent on the machine for now till things quiet down. I will keep this thread updated when I have anything to share.
