Fingerprint login keeps disappearing / Win10 P1 Gen3

2021-03-17, 15:05 PM

I have a P1 Gen 3, fresh install of Windows 10 20H1->20H2 updated.

I set up the Fingerprint login and BitLocker on drive C (if that makes a difference).

But the Fingerprint login is never available after restart. It becomes available only if Uninstall the FP reader driver completely, reinstall it and readd the fingerprints. But only until the reboot :(

Any ideas?

I did. Same thing. After reboot, the option for the fingerprint is no longer available again.

Might be worth mentioning that I have dual-boot?

It has nothing to do with dual-boot. I have a P1 Gen2 and the SAME issues. I have Windows 10 2004 Pro.

The real Problem are LENOVO´s bad drivers!

Hello alfaunits,

I suggest that you turn off the fingerprint in Windows, then check the fingerprint settings in BIOS.

Try to disable/enable, or re-enroll the fingerprint in BIOS.
Afterwards, set it again in Windows

*make sure that the drivers and BIOs are up to date thru the support site

Best regards,

Of course I tried all that...

Please skip the usual "Tech support checklist", and fix this. It is obviously a bug, and several people have it.

In my case, I can confirm the dual boot causes the fingerprints to clear for some reason (since the other install has FP disabled). If I only enter the one OS where I have it enabled, it stays enabled.

Hello,

It has been a while since I looked into this, but when I was investigating biometric security in Windows 10, one of the things I came across was that each biometric sensor had its own template database with a unique key encrypted on a per- basis in the TPM.

When you switch between operating systems, a different key is exposed, and the existing biometric data stored in the TPM is invalidated.

This is a security feature of Windows 10 that Microsoft designed to prevent an attacker from performing a parallel install of the operating system, enrolling new biometric data, rebooting into the original OS, and then using that new biometric data to log in, bypassing the previously-stored biometric data.

It might be possible to log into a dual-boot system by adding a second biometric reader (fingerprint or palm scanner, iris reader, etc.), and using the ThinkPad's built-in fingerprint reader or camera with one operating system, and the second, added-on biometric reader with the other operating system, but this presumes the new biometric device does not use the computer's TPM, which would be a little unusual.  You would definitely need to check with the manufacturer of the new biometric sensor to verify it can be used is a dual-boot (multi-boot?) configuration without affecting the other operating on the computer.

Regards,
