First major problem with my P72.

2021-06-14, 15:09 PM

Having a constant problem with the GPU/Onboard Graphics.
When my displays (Have an external ThinkVision M14 - USB-C connection) go to sleep when I come back and try and start working again an error occurs in that the external monitor stops working and is not recognised by the laptop (does not display options or be able to identify it).

I have to restart the machine and all is well again.
The error is "NVIDIA OpenGL Driver" "Unable to recover from kernel exception. The application must close" "Error Code: 3 (Subcode 2)

Edit - GPU Driver Details:

Given that 466.11 is an experimental nvidia driver I would first try the newer 462.59 driver and make sure the problem remains:

All went okay.

Hi,

Thanks for your suggestion.

I have added firefox and Microsoft to-do apps to change these options... I have changed them to use the Intel GPU as they don't really need to use the NVidia GPU IMO.
I will see if this reduces the errors.

This has to be something with one of the latest drivers.

Although my P73 (with RTX3000) is was crashing at least once a day when docked (yay, buy the most expensive workstation), lately it didn't that often (maybe once in 2 weeks - 10 times improvement, lol)

Today I got exactly the same crash as you mentioned - but for the first time it was able to "recover" from crash without hard reboot - with exactly the same OpenGL message.

By the way: I run official 462.59 ones. I just saw in WinUpdate driver queued - NVIDIA - Display - 27.21.14.6275, maybe it solves the problem.

[e] And a hard crash during driver update, lovely :) Anyway, after enforced reboot it is running on 462.75.

Hi... For me it has stablised after a recent windows update. Not had a problem since. I don't think it was the display driver. I have had a notification of a new display driver but not installed it yet.

Tempted fate.... Just crashed in display sleep mode...
Installed a new driver.... Reading the lines highlighted could be related to my issue.

Just had a shutdown.... And looking at the Event viewer it's Kernel-Power 41 (63) and this was the cause of the error earlier today:
