Flashing underscore on boot

2021-04-05, 20:18 PM

I have a thinkpad p50, and I recently took it to micro center for a diagnostic.

The result came and the hard drive had failed.

I bought a new nvme m.2 1 tb ssd and replaced the old one, booted it up, and installed windows.

Whenever I boot up (happened before the switch too), I see the Lenovo splash screen, press enter to interrupt normal startup, and then there is a big black box covering the entire screen, with an underscore flashing in the top left, about two flashes later we boot into windows.

From what I've heard it's windows searching for a boot device, but it can't find a bootable device so it goes into this until it can.

I checked my boot priority, it was Windows boot manager > windows CD > windows FDD > My SSD.

even after I changed the boot priority to Windows boot manager > My SSD, it still happened.

What would be the cause of this, because I just installed a brand new hard drive?

What I'm thinking is I'm going to run some lenovo diagnostics and get all MoBo drivers, and all other drivers.

Will that fix it?

if not, what should I do?

Thanks!

Hello Dani :D,

Greetings

I suggest that you load the BIOS default settings then save before exiting.
You may also run diagnostics, check for BIOS and driver updates thru the support site.

Update us how it goes

Regards,

Hi Lorenzo_Lenovo

Thanks for responding, and sorry for the late update.

I completely cleared out the CMoS and reinstalled a new bios.

formatted the drive multiple times and re - installed windows

tried to rebuild and repair BCD and MBR multiple times

and after all of that it still happens.

I'm really worried because I'm wondering if I have some kind of boot sector virus that could be doing something harmful to my machine, and steal data, info, etc.

Thanks

Hi Dani, I have two P50 an they too do the same thing booting from NVMe disks. It must be a bug in BIOS, once I took the same disk from P50 and put in P51 and then the Lenovo logo showed during the whole boot process. So I would rule out any Virus corruption.

Hmmmmm... only started happening recently with what i'm pretty sure isn't a nvme drive (my old hard drive) and it happens with my new nvme hard drive.

also only started happening when all of this virus stuff was going on.

This is how my machine boots from NVMe:

(with Legacy Boot setting in BIOS it would show the windows logo instead of an empty Lenovo logo.)

Phase 1

Phase 2:

Phase 2

Windows loading:

Phase 3

If this is how you machine starts now, it is "normal" for P50. I have tried to get the Lenovo logo to appear throughout but to no avail.

It's similar, but I have both legacy and uefi with legacy priority so I do see the windows logo. the flashing underscore happens for about two flashes and then goes away when windows boots. I will supply a video of the boot:

Here

ignore the audio if it plays.

Thanks!

I think the flashing is caused by the boot list, could you share a screenshot from BIOS setting?

I have the first NVMe disk as first priority, I have Windows Boot Manager further down, I have removed CD/diskette options.

My guess it that the BIOS attempts to open devices before the actual NVMe you eventually boot from first.

Edit: I may have a reason why your machine is flashing.

if you are using UEFI boot mode then you require windows boot manager to be first in the boot priority.

and not for legacy. I don't know why, but thats what i heard.I don't know how but windows CD and FDD went up as first in the boot order.

also windows boot manager is inexistent probably because of m bios boot settings
