Re: HELP! lenovo.modern.imcontroller.pluginhost is it a virus?

2018-06-28, 12:47 PM

Lenovo has a separate app (Vantage) for updates etc., and I think I can control when and which updates to install from there, and now I am learning that Lenovo actually silently and outside of my control installs driver updates? Maybe this update fixed something, maybe the next one destroys something again, and I am not even aware of it? I have no system restore point, no log and no way to actually tell what happened? I do not even know where to start looking why something broke?

This is quite frightening and definitely not what a user paying lots of money for a high end device like ThinkPad Carbon X1 expects - or any user, for that matter. What kind of policy is that? Is that even legal? Please change that ASAP!!! I am shocked.

Lenovo's "Silent" install of any program most certainly violates my Privacy and Personal Choice of what and when I can install on my personal P51.  Lenovo please remove your "Silent Backdoor" from my Computer...

We are not installing any software or program, and only install update/upgrade for components in vantage itself.

They are all components only for Vantage funnctions. It is a self update process for bug fix or function enhancement.

And for enterprise customer, they could use group policy to control updates.

For enterprise customer, please download the enterprise version from link below:

https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/hf003321

And install and configure by deployment guide

For individual user, they would get vantage from  preload or download from Windows Store

For enteprise customer, they may build their own image and install their own softwares, and need standalone package to install.

Again, Vantage self update would not install any hardware drivers or software.

Drivers or software are installed by System update or SystemUpdate plugin in Vantage.

Your so-called "components only for Vantage functions" break productive behaviour while Vantage is not even running. Reminder:

  • The problem disappered when deactivating adaptive brightness.
  • Vantage installs/updates a system driver. That very driver was the culprit. So does it matter if it is what you call a "hardware driver"? That seems more like a philosophical distinction to me.

At any rate, I do not care which software the update is for. I want to get information before the update starts (unless I somehow configure unattended updates) and decide by myself whether to install or not after reading the release notes of whatever component gets updated or installed. And no matter if the installation is unattended, semi-automatic or manual, I want to see a protocol of what was installed where and when.

How does a group policy I am not even aware of help with that? And even if I use that group policy in order to deactivate the updates, this is not what I want. I want to have a choice and information, not completely disable the updates.

Back to the original discussion. Is anyone still seeing the lenovo.modern.imcontroller.pluginhost problem? The update cured it for me.

I don't work for Lenovo. I'm a crazy volunteer!
