HW Error in Boot Up Diagnostics

2020-06-08, 13:29 PM

During boot up I keep getting a quick flash on screen with:

>>   hwtest:err:Could not determine proper comId for Opal: 65539   <<

Cannot find any info on that error.  My W540 does not have an Opal drive.  Using 2 Samsung EVO 840 2tb drives.

Thank you for any help.

I wish to thank all for the great help in solving this issue.... Particularly the Lenovo team that supports the best portable workstation, the "ThnikPad W 540 and W541".

As far as I know, the 840 EVO does use OLAL drive encryption.  I think it is a retail drive so firmware updates would come from Samsung.  Get a copy of Samsung Magician and see if there is newer firmware.

THANK YOU Rich.  Indeed I used Samsung's Magician from day one of installation.  Now running Magicianb v6.3.0, and all EVO 860 firmware are up to date.

I guess it's no harm, as all the drives perform well.  Maybe a BIOS setting issue in the boot up test.  I do get that same error that flashes by on boot on all my W540's and W541's.  (using 4 systems for field work). The common link, is that all are upgraded with Samsung drives....  I guess I'll look at the BIOS settings.

I haver never seen the message.  Are you using the drives in a RAID or mirroring environment?

Still having issues with two W540, and two W541... still getting that error message during boot up about OPAL.

>> Could not determine proper comId for Opal: 65539

No, the Samsung SSD 860 EVO 2TB drives are not in RAID mode. The internal is my [C:] drive, and in caddy [D:] replacing the DVD, the same kind of drive, as a data storage drive.
