well i tried what you said and i still cant get into the CCC so maybe my computer is broken, i even did an F1 on bootup and changed the graphics setting to discrete and it still didnt work so i dont know maybe when a driver for the V5700 comes out it will fix this problem.

W500 and the ATI Fire Driver

2008-10-03, 11:54 AM

I am starting a new thread, since the old one seems to have petered out with no help from Lenovo.

My new W500 (running Vista Business 64) is not recognizing my video card as the ATI FireGL 5700; it is instead saying I have a Radeon 3650 card, which effectively makes my machine a T500 as opposed to a W500. Normally, I wouldn't give a flip, but my primary reason for buying this machine was to run my seat of SolidWorks, which requires an OpenGL class graphics card to run properly (from both a feature set and stability standpoint). Since SW doesn't recognize a workstation class Open GL card in my W500, it doesn't run properly.

Lenovo has said they are working on it and other users have said that this should be a simple fix, but alas, no word for a couple of weeks now.

So Lenovo... what is up with this?

gkoenig, welcome to the forum,

starting a new thread doesn't necessarily help the posters in the original thread. Posting in that thread will bring the subject back to the top of the pile. It also has the added benefit of keeping the subject in one place without splitting the discussion.

Duplicate thread - Thread locked

We're all waiting a fix for that. I just hope we won't have to wait months before Lenovo releases a new driver update.

I just got my Vista64 W500 and verified what everyone is seeing- becuase of the ID mess up the card is running as a Radeon 3650 and not just being labled wrong as I said in an earlier post.  If your CCC says you have 512MB ram you do have the right chip.  There is a bios and driver update that will be released very soon to remedy the problem, and it will fix some of the other smaller issues people have been seeing at the same time.  :smileyhappy:

Now if only i could "fix" the fact that my 1920x1200 screen makes my eyes hurt.

tdesaix,

let us know if you figure out a screen resolution setting that is optimal.  I am also having trouble adjusting to 1920x1200 screen.  mostly because the internet text is too small.  I use firefox and adjusted the default font but it only works for  afew pages.

Re: W500 and the ATI Fire Driver

Hi all,

I am new to this forum, but signed up because of this graphics card issue.

I mainly bought this computer to run Mastercam X3, Solidworks, Inventor, and Microstation.  So far, I have had problems with Mastercam and could only fix it by choosing to disable hardware acceleration which seems pretty bad considering the software recommends running full acceleration.  I am also concerned that Solidworks will not perform up to par from reading some of the posts.

The big issue is this.  I have only about 4 days left to initiate an RMA for this computer.  I really don't want to return the computer (I bought it for Thinkpads ergonomics and rep), but considering I am using it to help mentor a high school robotics program (starts in January), I need to know that I have a computer that will run my apps.  Heaven forbid that I buy a dell to replace this one.

Mark,

I appreciate your earlier response to the forum, and that you said that something would come out soon, but it feels like its  been a long time since we heard an official update from Lenovo.  If Lenovo could give us an update, perhaps post it somewhere on their site, it would certainly be appreciated as my comfort level is just about exceeded.  Again, I don't want to return this computer, but I need to know a fix is going to  be out so I can teach the students (after I learn myself that is).  Again, my RMA option is about to expire.

tdesaix,

I appreciate your post, are your assurances of a fix forthcoming from Lenovo or are they from Mark's earlier posts?

Sorry, haven't been on this forum long enough to know who is who.

All,

Thanks for the updates.  As you note in the thread, we are working on some issues and have a tip for them along with some FAQs on these cards and I wasn't aware of the open issue here - I hadn't checked back on this thread in over a week.

I'll share these last 2 pages of comments, especially the points on Solidworks with our engineering team.

Tig368 - I would ensure you have at least one call into the support center to doccument your issues - take note of your case number - I'll work with you off line with regard to your time concerns.

Thanks again for the PM prompt, and the detailed posts.

Mark
