Hideously expensive Bluray drives

2008-09-22, 1:34 AM

Hi all,

I'm in the process of researching the components I want in my Thinkpad and I have to ask.

Why are the Bluray drives so expensive (in Australia)? Compare the Australian & US sites:

ThinkPad Blu-ray Recordable Ultrabay Slim (Serial ATA) [add $644.00 $504.00] (US)

ThinkPad Blu-ray Burner Ultrabay Slim Serial ATA Drive (43N3215) [add $1,499.00*]  (AUS)

Is Lenovo trying to rip Australian buyers off? After all it would'nt cost any more to ship to Australia than it does to the US.

I havn't seen any manufacturers shipping Blurays anywhere near this price. Can anyone shed some light on the discrepancy?

Cheers

Lyndon

Australia does get the raw end of the deal when it comes to technology, Thinkpads are only cheap in USA. I think Lenovo have pretty much maintained the price premium in Australia, which was started by IBM. After all Australia is a small market compared to USA. If you think this is bad, it is even worse in China where the Thinkpad stuffs are actually made, the price premium in China is at least 20 % higher than Australia on a good day.

You either option it or get it off a friend in USA.

The question here would be do you really need a slim portable blueray burner??? If you wait for a while, it will get cheaper. Since the price Lenovo is charging you is the same as if you buy it separately.

Hi wjli2,

I figured it was a market size thing combined with how much they can get out of people. I assume they dont make the drives themselves. They are probably made by one of the large optical drive manufacturers like Pioneer or Sony with a Lenovo connector tacked on the back. I don't know how they can justify the cost premium when everyone else is charging $500-$700 for the same equipment. I hadn't thought about asking someone in the US to get me one. Thanks for responding.

Cheers

Lyndon

well, most of these drives are made by either Panasonic or Hitachi LG on behalf of Lenovo, Lenovo like most of the laptop companies have contracted out much of the manufacturing to large Taiwanese contract OEM manufacturers. You won't find many manufacturer that does their own drive now, maybe apart from Panasonic, LG, Sony, etc.
