How many monitors does the w520 support?

2013-08-18, 23:39 PM

Hi I have a w520 1920x1080 (nVidia quadro 1000)  that is currently connected to mini dock plus series 3. I'm currently running two external monitors, both are Dell 24 inch and I just ordered a third monitor (Asus 27 inch). I'm just wondering if the w520 can actually support all three monitors simultaneously?

Further Detail:

I have one of my Dell monitors connected via VGA and the other via DVI to display port. These monitors are all connected to the dock. I'm planning on connecting the Asus monitor via hdmi to displayport which will also be connected to the dock. Is this possible because I have read some threads on these forums that driving three external monitors on the w520 is not possible? Just need some clarification, thanks in advance.

The W520 supports 3 screens (2 external + 1 internal) or 3 externals + 0 internal.

If you need a third screen support (and not using the internal), do the following.

Plug of the screens to the DVI or DP on the series 3 plus dock, and the third screen has to be connected to the displayport on the laptop if my memory serves me correctly.

You can connect two external monitors via the doc, but Im pretty sure you cant connect a third. I have 2x 30" connected via DP.

I don't have a dock, and I only have the Quadro 1000

Will my W520 support two external monitors via "DisplayPort Multi-Stream Transport (MST)" DP1.2, so I can plug two DP monitors into the one DisplayPort connector on the side? And still run the FHD display on the W520?

Or am I stuck with one external monitor DP, and one VGA?

I'm looking at the possibility of a pair of Dell U2413's daisy-chained.

This shopworn topic has been discussed ad nauseum on this board. Allow me to summarize:

You can always drive the laptop monitor. In addition:

Without a dock you can drive 2 external monitors, one from the displayport, one from the vga connector. No, you cannot daisy chain displayport monitors. The spec'd max resolution is 2560x1600, although someone on this board recently  reported that 4k is possible, albiet at 30Hz.

If you want to get a  minidock, the best bet is the 433830u.  You can still find it on ebay. The second best choice is the 433835u. The difference is that the 30 has a eSata port. The 35 has a usb 3 port which will function only as usb 2 with the W520.

You can then drive 2 external monitors from the minidock, but no more, not even by connecting additional ones to the W520 directly.

For additional monitors, I recommend a Displaylink powered device such as

Targus dual video via usb 3

2560x1600 Displaylink adapters are available I.e. Star tech

That about sums it up. Of course this question will crop up again and again, as no one searches the board before posting. No offense intended.

Sorry! I am but an egg!

I guess I was hoping there was some magic driver trick to get a W520 to do DP1.2, without a HW update. And hoping someone would spoon feed me...

The officlal Lenovo stance on how to connect multiple monitors to a W520: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-76617

Basically with the laptop alone, one Displayport monitor and one VGA monitor (in addition to the laptop screen). If you use a dock, you can use DP, DVI or VGA external monitors, but still only the laptop screen and two externals. (Q: if on a dock the W520 is used closed i.e. screen off, can you then drive 3 externals? Not that I care to use this configuration...)

Some may be willing to hook up two external monitors configured as one big screen (2ea 1920x1200 monitors driven as one big 3840x1200 monitor), in which case they may prefer the Lenovo Displayport to Dual Displayport Adapter

At least this is my interpretation of the current W520 situation.

you can drive 3 screens natively of up to 3840x1200 (on each screen), all using displayport.

You can use a displayport splitter to drive two 1920x1200 in mosaic mode (3840 x 1200). This will be counted as one screen. So theoretically you can 6 x 1920x1200 running.

Also, you can use USB2DVI or USB2DP converter to drive more monitor if you wish.

Sorry Jin Li, but the W520 can drive but two screens "natively".

What do you mean by natively? as in without the dock? It can drive 2 external LCD (using dp and vga on the laptop) in addition to the one internal LCD. Make sure you have your Nvidia Optimus running to have all three monitors supported.

Here is a good article regarding 3 LCD support (one internal) on Linux.

Jin

I agree with you. Please read my post above for a full explanation. The term "natively" is yours.

I am only talking about external monitors. Two is the maximum, without a splitter or Displaylink device.
