How to get the WiFi LED to flash to indicate WiFi activity?

2012-03-12, 2:39 AM

System: W520.

Current behaviour:

The WiFi LED (next to the Lenovo logo on the user facing side of the LCD panel in an open-lid state) is displaying a constent green light once the WiFi Radio is in the on state, regardless of any WiFi activity.

Desirable behaviour:

To have the WiFi LED flashing to indicate WiFi activity.  This behaviour was implemented in ThinkPad X200.

Question:

Is it possible to do so on the W520 via software configuration/setting?

W510 already doesn't do this. Can perhaps try installing an Lenovo OEM Intel 5300AGN (from the X200/W500/W700 era)?

Yeah, I noticed.  Wonder why Lenovo took that implementation off the table.  Would be great if it's user configurable.

Doesn't seem to work with 6300.

The wifi LED flashes in Ubuntu to indicate activity, I find it distracting. Not sure why it flashes in Ubuntu and not Windows though, but there must be a software setting somewhere.

Weird. The modification works for my W520 and 6300. Takes a reboot for it to work. Make sure you set LEDMODE to 1 and not 2 as the guide states.

Ah...maybe that's what I'm missing...a reboot.

I only toggled the wifi radio power state previously.

Awesome, it's working now.  I ended up still to lazy to reboot the system...so I tried Device Manager -> Disable the 6300, then Enable it again.

Thank you!
