How to stop P51 from running on battery?

2019-11-25, 23:17 PM

My Lenovo's P51 laptop is always connected to it's power supply (model: ADL170NLC2A. FRU: 45N0560). I did not purchased it separately. It's native power supply that come with my laptop. But recently it started drain its battery :smileysad:... At this moment it indicates, that time left on the battery is 2:30 and 47% remaining charge...

I tired to open new discussion here - https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-P-and-W-Series-Mobile/Power-supply-for-P51-laptop/m-p/4581246/highlight/false#M84439, but it has accepted solution (well, it's not, but I can't set it back as un-accepted)...

So, the question remains - how to make my Lenovo's P51 laptop stop running on battery and make it again running as directly from power supply?

I'd appreciate any ideas how to do it!

Thanks in advance for any advice!

If you look on the taskbar or in Lenovo Vantage, does the machine show as plugged in?

No, it is not. At this moment on the taskbar I see:

58 min (16%) remaining
Battery saver on

That's all what I see there...

I can see if power supply is plugged in ny looking at it's socket (at back of p51 laptop). LED is completely off (black), which means it's not charging... If I put computer into sleep mode, the LED becomes first red and after charging at whole night - it will be green... Until I wake up laptop and at that moment it becomes black again :smileysad:.

it sounds like one of 2 things

1) charging circuit on motherboard damaged

2) The connection to the signal pin (center of plug) on the power supply.

If you have a meter, check the resistance between the signal pin and the outside face of the plug.

Hi, Rich

You've mentioned:

  1) charging circuit on motherboard damaged
  2) The connection to the signal pin (center of plug) on the power supply.

I don't think it is #2, because power supply charges laptop battery overnight quite well...

If it is being sensed as lower wattage, it will charge only when not running.  A broken wire to the signal pin will be an open circuit which denotes 90w.

The obvious first thing to try is test the computer with another charger, preferably one that is rated for the same or greater wattage.

As a side note, if you don't really know what you're doing, I recommend you not to stick multimeter probes into the charger plug, especially while the charger is connected to AC.

Make sure that there are no apps in the background that can drain battery. What are Your CPU and RAM usage? Also, make sure that CPU is inactive when on battery.

If You are using Linux then good luck, both power management and how switchable graphics handeled are garbage on Linux (like almost anything on that OS, at least in my experience.).

Laptop is in sleep mode, when I'm leaving it overnight. I don't know what is CPU and RAM usage at that time.

What do you mean "make sure that CPU is inactive when on battery"?

Also, I do not run Linux. Laptop is using W10 latest version.

I'm using 170W battery charger (model ADL170NLC2A). So, it's not the case here...
