How to upgrade ThinkPad P51

2020-08-26, 0:59 AM

Hello Everyone! I'm new to the Lenovo community. I'm wondering if anyone can help me on how to upgrade my ThinkPad P51?

I'm an architecture student, and my ThinkPad cannot handle programs like Sketchup and AutoCad efficiently. It made me wonder why as I bought this computer, thinking it is powerful enough.  I need an immediate upgrade as I almost failed my last assessment. I had to screengrab everything (instead of printing vectors)  from Sketchup to CAD to have something to submit.

The problem is I'm not sure what I need to upgrade. But I do know it's either RAM, SSD, HHD, or all of the above.

I attached the specs of my ThinkPad P51. Please, if you can advise on any replacement to speed up my ThinkPad, anything would be much appreciated.

Thanks so much!

With what you posted, there is no way to know what is your bottleneck.  I can say that Autocad can be a memory hog, so adding memory would be where I would start

Thank you Rich! I should add RAM then.  Also, I have 512GB SSD M.2 PCle and I have only 184 GB left. Is this still enough wiggle room if I am using 2-3 3D apps at the same time?

I usually add drive space when I fall below 20% free.  You have much more than that.
