[HowTo] make brightness and OSD work with nvidia drivers (W510)

2010-09-13, 16:41 PM

Hi guys,

so I just registered for this, since I saw a couple previous posts about brightness controll and OSD with nvidia drivers and thought I'd share it.

The nvidia driver does not support the OSD or brightness control as it ships. You can't even adjust the brightness, there is only the OSD jumping from 1 to 6 and then counting to 15 without changing the brightness. But it's quite easy to make it work.

The key lies in some entries in the nv_disp.inf which comes with the nvidia driver. As it seems Lenovo changed the one in the driver they released to make the brightness control and OSD work. I have attached the modded inf file for the 259.57 which enables the brightness controll with the new driver. If you are interested in what I changed, just compare it to the original one, its only a text file ;)

I ONLY COPIED A FEW LINES FROM THE LENOVO FILE TO THE NVIDIA FILE! I didn't remove or change anything. So there should be the entire feature set and everything from the nvidia driver.

Here is how to install the nvidia driver with a mod nv_disp.inf:

This is for the 64bit Win 7 drivers on the W510 only! I have not tested it with anything else, maybe it works, maybe not ...

1. get the driver from here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/quadro-win7-winvista-64bit-259.57-whql-driver.html

2. execute the file and extract it to the default location.

3. when the large setup screen appears cancel setup and go to c:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\259.57\WinVista_Win7_64\International\ and replace the nv_disp.inf with the one from here: http://ul.to/3ztqy6 . Make a backup of the original if you like.

4. start setup.exe from the same folder.

5. reboot - done

I only tested this on my W510 with FX880M and everything seems to work fine: 3D,  dynamic clocks, OSD, brightness, etc.

NO GUARANTEE THAT IT WILL WORK WHATSOEVER, YOU ARE DOING THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK, THIS IS NOT OFFICIALLY FROM LENOVO! COMES AS IS, MAY WORK OR NOT. Sry for that I just don't want any trouble if it doesn't work for someone.

Since some people seem to have problems with the old lenovo drivers and want to use newer ones, I thought I'd share this. Thanks Lenovo for not updating your drivers, changing that inf around is like 5 minutes of work ...

I am not an expert on this inf thing, so if anyone has suggestions, you are welcome to contribute. :)

How can I attach files here?

Well for me the OSD didn't work for the brightness setting, everywhere else the OSD worked. Additionally with the 259.57 drivers I couldn't even change the brightness at all using the Fn keys. On some other driver versions the brightness settings between 1 and 6 got skipped. All that is what I tried to fix and it works here ... :)

I see... my OSD including brightness works fine from original shipped specs so I guess I'm ok.

Ok now I see what you mean about the OSD... if I want to upgrade to the latest NVidia driver the OSD won't work and I'll need to do the work around as you posted.  I'm going to give it a try... but to update, when you go to download the NVidia driver it needs to be the international version and not US because your file looks for stuff in the International folder and not English folder.  I'm redownloading from the UK site now.

prince_kassad14, this laptop gets hotter than most under normal conditions in gaming mode it gets real hot but about comparable to most laptops.  Performance wise if you're talking about high end latest games you will not be happy for the most part, if you're talking about slightly lower graphics settings and games that doesn't demand super high fps then this is more than fine.  Comparing to similar GPU cards of ATI Radeon 4670 this is probably just below the quality of the ATI and runs a little hotter probably due to ventilation.  Build quality I'm happy with it overall.  Only reason I'm "settling" for this laptop is because it's the only one with touchscreen with the specifications I wanted namely upgradable parts and dedicated GPU.

I can play Crysis Warhead in 1920x1200 resolution ext monitor with low graphics settings at decent fps, which is great for a laptop.  Starcraft 2, no problem in low settings at full resolution but at Ultra it'll shutdown, and quite often.  F1 2010 indy racing game, low settings it's playable but at times it may stutter/lag so not all that great.  So basically the latest and greatest games, you'll be a bit dissappointed but at the same time I can't see many other system that could do that much better with the exception of the Alienware M17x with the new GPUs and even then in some of the new games it'll just be like what we experience with regular games at best.

Yes, you are right, the international version should be used. Sry, forgot to mention that.
