Incorrect AC adapter is attached: UNSOLVABLE

2019-02-18, 7:29 AM

Hello

I have the “Incorrect AC adapter is attached” stuck on my w540

I have de-installed power manager, tried safe mode, re-installed ACPI, AC drivers, I do have the last BIOS but nothing works

I have trouble to understand what piece of gear I need to replace

Battery, AC external unit or replacing the internal AC connector?

Battery charging OK if laptop is turned off

Battery NOT charging if laptop is on

Laptop not accepting regular power if battery attached

If no battery attached, laptop works but GPU doesn't seem to pull the full power but very unsure about this

CPU is doing well without battery, pulling 100% and it's a i7 MX 3.9 Ghz

Thanks in advance

What is the wattage of your adapter?  Your symptoms sound like 90W which is too small.  If the connection to the signal (center) pin is broken, the system thinks it is 90w.  You need at least 135w

External AC unit seems to be 170W

I went to a store and that's what they said

Very little chances connector is broke, laptop didn't move from my desk almost

i think it might be the external power unit to replace but it sounds weird: battery normally have more chances to die

i still believe it can be a software issue

Is it a lenovo adapter or aftermarket? It may not use the same convention.  It should say Lenovo and 170W on the adapter, itself.  If you have an ohm meter, measure the resistance between the signal pin and the outside, metal face of the connector (with the adapter unplugged).

Thanks for your answer,

This is a genuine Lenovo charger, the one that came with the Laptop I bought at Lenovo.com in 2014

I don't have any ohm meter. I wish Windows had one inside the system.

I will buy another charger soon, my GPU doesn't seem to have the right power without battery.

I just hope it's not the yellow connector to replace on the motherboard

Last time I disassembled this machine it took me 2 weeks to re-assemble it

Re: Incorrect AC adapter is attached: UNSOLVABLE

I too have just encountered this problem on my Lenovo laptop, though mine is a Thinkpad T430. I used the laptop for about a month with the original Lenovo charger that it came with and it worked fine.

Last week, I decided to make the following upgrades to my device: Samsung EVO SSD, 16GB RAM, i7-3236 quad-core processor, new cooling fan/heatsink, Windows 10 Pro operating system. So I've made all the upgrades and everything is working very well, actually. The computer boots up super fast, the fan runs very quietly, and the RAM and CPU all show up as registered and working correctly in the computer properties.

However, just as you have experienced, my original power adapter will not charge the battery while the computer is in use. It will charge it when the laptop is off or in sleep mode, but whenever I plug the power adapter into the laptop while I'm using it, I get the "Incorrect AC Adapter is Attached" error message.

Here's the funny thing. I also have the 170W Lenovo docking station for my T430, and when I dock the laptop to the docking station, NO PROBLEMS CHARGING THE BATTERY! Thus, I have a work around to use the computer, but what good is it to have a laptop if I can't keep it juiced while at the library or at work? I literally bought the thing because I wanted portability!

Long story short, there may be a solution to this by buying a slightly more powerful Lenovo AC adapter. The 170W AC Adapter that goes with my docking station is the yellow "butterfly style" connection, so that won't fit directly into my Thinkpad's charging port (it has the older style "round yellow" connection. I believe the wattage of the charger I'm having issues with right now is the 65W model. I will go ahead and buy a used 90W version off Ebay and give it a whirl. If that resolves my issue, I will post back to this thread to share my success. I hope you find a solution as well, Bro!

All the adapters I have seen do NOT pass the signal pin.  They will not work with a machine that needs to identify the adapter.  A round-connector 170W adapter that is passed through an adapter will look like a 90W to the power circuitry.

Ok this is paranormal

There is some paranormal activity on my computer

So during 4 days I have tried to work using this machine

4 days with almost no power, extra-long HD delays despite 10x defrag, CPU ok but GPU like 50%

The 5st day the machine worked again at full power so I tried to plug my battery again: and it worked

Battery charged while machine plugged in and everything was working at full power

I went to sleep shut down my machine and this morning nothing works!!

No power, almost no GPU, super long drive delays…

I removed software from my machine, all those installed recently

I am about to order a new power supply but I doubt it will fix my problem

It looks like a software issue or a motherboard issue to my opinion

Next time I will buy MSI/Asus I had too many problems on this machine

My bet (with no real knowledge) is that the different adapter willl solve the problem.  I GUESS that there is a cracked wire in the connection.  If that didn't work, I would try a clean win 10 install.
