Installing W520 heatsink problem

2016-09-08, 7:54 AM

Hello,

Tonight I installed 55W heatsink and fan that I purchased from the official spare parts service from IBM, model number 04W1574. I also upgraded the CPU.

I'm obviously doing something wrong in the way I'm screwing it back in because in my first few attempts there was zero contact between the Nvidia discrete GPU and the heatsink. I know that because the thermal paste I applied to the GPU didn't touch the heatsink.

Third time around, I screwed in the heatsink for the GPU first (screwing in order 5, 6, 7) and then the CPU (1, 2, 3, 4). Is this the right way to do it? I notice screws 5 & 6 are somewhat spongy even when fully tightened. Is that by design?

Currently have an idling temperature of 62 degrees C for the GPU running in discrete mode. With any activity it immediately shoots up to the low to mid 80s. It then emergency powers off. Yikes.

CPU appears fine, idling at 45 degrees C. So I'm confident that the problem is limited to the GPU side.

Can't disable the nvidia chip via bios because I'm running bitlocker and it won't boot without at least optimus. However I run discrete only because there are no Intel graphics drivers for Windows 10.

Thanks,

Damon

According to the HMM you actually should tigthen the CPU screws first, and then the ones for the Nvidia chip.

Also check that the heatpipes are not bent (eventually post a picture here so that we can take a closer look)

Thank you @ . The heatsink pipes were bent such that the heat spreaders were at an incorrect angle. I could tell that by comparing it to the 45W heatsink I pulled out of it. I tried to match the new heatsink with the old and had some success. The Nvidia chip is now far cooler, but for now the CPU is now running hotter than when I initially installed it, so I'll need to revisit it again.

Now one thing I'm wondering about is that the fans in both heatsinks (55W and 45W) use identical model numbers:  KSB06105HA. Does that mean that I already had the 55W heatsink and fan, even though the FRU on the older heatsink is 04W1576 and not 04W1574 like the 55W part I recently ordered?

Thanks,

Damon

KSB06105HA is the part number of the fan itself, not the assembly.  The 45-watt and 55-watt designations refer to the CPU maxamum usage, not the fan itself.  The 55-watt CPU uses a bigger heat sink, not a bigger fan
