Installing second HDD into ultrabay on a W500

2009-07-09, 15:03 PM

I have a W500 that I am trying to install a second HDD into.

I heard that lenovo recently released a third series adapter (mfg. # 43N3412-Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter III) that will do this.

However, these are nowhere to be found. So my question is, will the second series adapter work (mfg. # 43R1980- Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter II SATA)?

Thanks for your help

the W500 ultrabay adapter use a SATA connection, while the second series adapter use a PATA connection, so there are not interchangeble in that regard, you will have to use the third series adapter in the W500, T400, T500, etc.

I've actually heard that the second generation one (43R1980) will work fine; it is a SATA adapter

SATA adapter on the second generation one, use a SATA to PATA converter within the drive adpater, with the Ultrabay drive bay using a final PATA connector to connect to the motherboard. On the third generation adapter, it is a native SATA drive bay with the final sata motherboard connection.

So second generation adapter running at PATA speed even with the SATA drive, while the third generation supports the SATA mode and SATA transfer rate.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by second and third generation? The first ever SATA adapter for ThinkPads T60 & Co., the 40Y8725 was for SATA drives with a PATA connector for the bay.

@ klenard The 43N3412-Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter III you mentioned is for the T400s bay, see here. The correct Bay adapter for the W500 & Co is the 43R1980 which is SATA. As yet I have no information regarding backwards compatability for the 43N3412.

Hope this helps

Andy

By the second and the third generation he probably indicate Adpter II and Adapter III but I don't think it was a matter of a generation but rather the models that the adapter would fit into (at least T61 had a different front cover shape for the Ultrabay). Anyway Andy correctly stated that the part should be 34R1980 - ThinkPad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter II

Now, I have no idea if it is SATA to PATA or whatever but the speeds reach 70 MB/s when transfering between drives which is better than any of my external usb drives.

I have a second hard drive installed in the Ultrabay on my W500.  The part number of the caddy that holds the drive is FRU 43R1984 / ASM 43R1981.  The label on the part states that it is a "ThinkPad Serial ADA Hard Drive Bay Adapter II".

I am not familiar with the terms 'second series' and 'third series'.

Hope this helps.
