Installing second ssd in P16 Gen 2

Has anybody installed a second ssd in a P16 Gen 2.  I've done this in earlier P series but just want to confirm that it is easy to access the empty bay and plug in the M.2 SSD.  Hopefully it is directly accessible from the back by removing one simple cover.  Just want to confirm from someone who has done this.

Installing second ssd in P16 Gen 2

Re:Installing second ssd in P16 Gen 2

Hi sfoeuroflyer!

Greetings!

Installing a second SSD in a P16 Gen 2 should be relatively straightforward. However, I would recommend checking the specific model's hardware maintenance manual for detailed instructions. You can find this manual and Parts Replacement Video on the Lenovo website here.

Please ensure to follow all safety precautions when handling internal components. If you're not comfortable doing this yourself, I would recommend seeking assistance from a professional or a local authorized service center, which you can find here.

If you have any more questions or need further assistance, feel free to ask.

Best regards,

Re:Installing second ssd in P16 Gen 2

Thanks for the note.  Looking at the link you sent, the question is not 100% addressed.  For the P16 Gen 2 are BOTH SSD bays accessible via the bottom small cover?????  I was hoping that would be the case.  Then installing a second M.2 drive into an empty bay would be easy.

In particular I was hoping that it would one would not need to do the much more complicate procedure of lifting up the keyboard.

Can I please get a specific answer

It will depend on where the current SSD is installed.  One slot is under the keyboard, one is under the service door.

Open the service door and have a look?

Re:Installing second ssd in P16 Gen 2

As mentioned by Zolthan, the location of the current SSD will determine the ease of installing a second one. If the current SSD is under the service door, then installing a second one under the keyboard will require more steps.

I would recommend you check the current SSD location by opening the service door as suggested.

Re:Installing second ssd in P16 Gen 2

Actually I was asking this question BEFORE placing an order.  So checking the underside access door was not something I could do without a machine in front of me.  There are in fact two locations for M.2 SSDs, one directly accessible via the rear panel and the other underneath the keyboard.  I called Tech Support to ask which is the location for the first SSD...the rear or under the keyboard?  Said another way, if the machine is built with a single SSD, where is the empty bay?  Oddly, Tech Support was not sure.  One document called the under keyboard location "A" and the rear "B".  Another document suggested the opposite.  The reason the question mattered is that although I was prepared to install a second SSD via the rear access panel, I really did not want to deal with the keyboard and its wire harness.  Solution:  I ended up ordering a single larger SSD (preferrable anyway in that the storage would be a single volume)

Re:Installing second ssd in P16 Gen 2

Thank you for your update. I understand your concerns about the SSD installation process. It's unfortunate that there was some confusion regarding the SSD locations in the P16 Gen 2. I'm glad to hear that you found a solution that works for you by ordering a single larger SSD.

If you have any more questions or need further assistance in the future, feel free to ask. Enjoy your new P16 Gen 2!

Best regards,

Re:Installing second ssd in P16 Gen 2

Hello,

I just got a ThinkPad P16 Gen 2 myself.  It was populated with one SO-DIMM and one SSD beneath the keyboard.  There was nothing installed beneath (or behind, I suppose) the trap door.

Upon receiving the unit, I powered it down through the BIOS (UEFI) firmware, then removed the factory-installed RAM and SSD.  These were replaced with four SO-DIMM memory modules (two underneath the keyboard, two behind the trap door) and two SSDs (one under keyboard, one behind trap door). I would estimate it took about 6-8 minutes to perform the hardware upgrade.

No problems noted afterwards, which consisted of powering the machine up, going into the BIOS and setting up the two SSDs as an NVMe RAID array and using the Lenovo's factory recovery media to install Windows to the new system.

Re:Installing second ssd in P16 Gen 2

Just want to be sure.  Feel like an idiot but not wanting to intervene any more than necessary.  Is this what an empty bay looks like on a P16 Gen 2?  It appears to be a blank in the space which could be easily removed and an M.2 SSD inserted in its place.  See the attachment.  Question though:  what purpose does a blank serve?
