Issues detecting W500 Display Driver

2008-11-09, 0:31 AM

Hello,

I have had the w500 for a month now, however for the past month i've been using the factory image for the O/S. Today, I performed an OEM install of Vista X64 ultimate on my laptop, and everything is up and running, however I seem to be having an issue with the switchable graphics. I downloaded the newest driver version which was release on 10/08/2008. The main problem is that windows will not detect the ATI graphics card (the V5700), so I get a lower index rating, and i'm not able to use the discret graphics. When I go into device manager and take a look under display adapter I have 2 adapters show up, the ATI 3650, and the Intel 4 chipset video. The intel 4 works fine, however with the ATI 3650 I get the yellow caution sign on it. I have tried going to ATI's site to download the drivers but still the same issue. I'm shot for ideas, anybody have anything out there that might help? Thank you.

artieg30, dmize, welcome to the forum,

have you tried changing the graphics BIOS settings to discrete from automatic and then installing the driver? Maybe this will make a difference??

Hi there, I followed your advice from above and changed the display to use only the discrete graphics, and it seemed to work fine until I re-installed the ATI drivers after switching into discrete graphics only mode. I found that as soon as I installed those drivers provided on the lenovo site, the laptop would change back from discrete back to switchable on its own. For some reason I still can't get the switchable graphics to work in the OEM install. I did notice though that my BIOs version is 1.13, so I will attempt to upgrade to 1.15 and hope to see if there are any changes from that. I will let you all know as soon as this has been done.

actually now whenever I reboot the system, It will automatically switch back to switchable graphics option. I will try the BIOs update later on and see if that might help. If anyone else has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

I have updated the BIOS to 1.19 but the problem above still existed. When I chose "switchable" in BIOS, it can't switch into the ATI card.

Hi there simonfinance, did you try also updating the display driver from the lenovo site after you updated the BIOs? It seems to have worked after I did the BIOs update to 1.19 and the driver install for the switchable graphics released on 10/12/2008.

You should try to clean install new driver from lenovo.com:

- Download new driver from lenovo.com
- Uninstall current driver:
   Vista:
   1.  Uninstall current driver by going to Start->Computer then click on
       “Uninstall or change a program”
   2.  Run “ATI Catalyst Install Manager”
   3.  Express Uninstall ALL ATI Software.
- Reboot
- Install ati driver you downloaded

- Reboot

Sadly, I've tried many ways mentioned above, but there is still a question mark on the "ATI FireGL 5700" (good side is 5700 can be recognised) when I chose "switchable" on BIOS, I can't use ATI card but only the Intel one.

I can only make 5700 work by choosing "Discrete" and "Disable" the switchable function on BIOS. Then in Vista's device manager, I can only see 5700. Meanwhile, I lose the Intel card.

This is an annoying problem, can anyone from Lenovo solve this problem? Can you please update the drivers to make it work?
