One thing I forgot - I also updated the Nvidia driver from the Nvidia website as well:

On the subject of the Wireless display workaround ... and the miniDisplayport is the best workaround for me.

As noted, there is frequently screen cut-off on the external monitor ... a centimeter or two around the screen edge is lost/hidden and for example the task bar is only half visible.

It appears this was always manageable, with a slider control available on the 'Intel Pro Widi' app; under "Settings", "Display" tab ... where there's a slidebar to adjust cut-off.

Another options is to install (from Microsoft Store) the Wireless Display Adapter app; from where firmware for the Ms Wireless Display dongle device can be updated, and where there is also a slidebar to adjust cut-off.

Still far simpler to just cable to the miniDisplayport ...

Re: Lenovo P50 - HDMI not working

I have an update for LINUX customers who would like to apply the P50/70 ThinkPad Thunderbolt firmware.

A LINUX version is scheduled for release later this year. However, Lenovo has gone back to the vendor to push for an earlier release date.

I'll provide an update once the new release date is secured.

Thank you,

Hi Amy,

Can you send me the Linux version for testing? I didn't find the private message button...

BTW, will Lenovo always provide Linux (using Ubuntu for me) versions of firmware updates from Now On? If so, that is great!

Cheers,

Re: Lenovo P50 - HDMI not working

2016-06-01, 1:33 AM

I have installed these:

  • Thunderbolt Update
  • Nvidia update
  • Bios Update

I was able to get the second external monitor (I have two external monitors) to work after I went into the bios and changed the display setting from "hybrid" to "discrete".

It worked. . .until I turned my computer off and back on again.

I have since repeated all of the steps associated with the bios, updates, plugging and unplugging monitors.

NOTHING will bring my second monitor to life through the HDMI.  (cable is HDMI to DVI)

The external monitor that is functioning is connected via a MiniDP to DVI.

Just to be sure we are all on the same page: I have two external monitors.

Which other port on this P50 could I connect this monitor to?
I'll have to purchase another cable.

Any advice on Thunderbolt 3 docking stations?

I don't want to lose any display performance (SolidWorks) as I go through cables.

I figured something out!
If only one of my external monitors is working, I can

  1. restart the computer
  2. enter bios
  3. set display to "hybrid"
  4. F10 (save and exit bios)
  5. Start windows
  6. Restart computer
  7. Enter bios
  8. Set graphics to "discrete"
  9. F10 (save and exit bios)
  10. Start windows and. . .it works!

Satisfaction level with P50 = very low.

@Allan_F

The thunderbolt firmware patch is extremely peculiar in its installation. Have you verified that the NVM version as reported by the Intel Thunderbolt software has increased from Rev13 to Rev16?

Re: Lenovo P50 - HDMI not working

Unfortunately, replacement of the discrete graphics card did nothing to resolve the issues with the audio endpoints not showing up and the HDMI audio device not appearing in Device Manager.

My client has given up and accepted that he will need to use external speakers on a permanent basis. This will have to remain a mystery despite the almost 30 hours I have spent trying to troubleshoot various issues with the P70. FYI, the technician who came out said that he's seen this very issue many times and that it never ends up being resolved by hardware replacement; he called Lenovo support on behalf of the customer and they blamed it on the TV, despite us trying this on several different TVs with several different cables. So I imagine this is a much more widespread issue, but is not being reported accurately because phone support reps are getting away with blaming it on the customer's peripherals rather than where the problem truly is, and the customers are giving up because they don't want to go and buy a new TV.

Thanks to those who assisted, and I hope there have been some takeaways for Lenovo throughout the 20 pages of discussion over this issue.
