Re: Lenovo P50 - HDMI not working

2016-10-03, 4:05 AM

Good Evening,

I connect my P50 to an external monitor, through the HDMI port and an HDMI => VGA cable.

This setup worked without any problems, since I got the laptop, two months ago.

Until yesterday.

Upon restart, there was no output to the second monitor, which was not being detected by Windows nor by the NVIDIA CP.

I restarted the computer several times, conected/disconnected the cable, etc. Nothing worked.

Windows, annoyingly, started playing the "close program" sound. I was not closing any programs, so maybe, these were background tasks.

I run the Lenovo hardware scan, expecting a problem with the NVIDIA card but everything came back Ok, except for a connectivity warning, which, according to help, was nothing to worry about.

I searched the forum for "HDMI problems" and came across this long thread, which shows these problems as "solved".

I downloaded the "solution" (install the Thunderbold firmware update) and was about to apply it, when...

Yesterday, I put the computer to sleep and left the house. When I came back, the external monitor was working again!

I put the computer to sleep, hibernate, shut down, several times. No problems with the external monitor.

So, should I install the updated Thunderbolt firmware update now? (Windows doesn't show any installed Thunderbolt software)

Amy,

thanks for that info, and for looking into this forum.

My P50 displays just fine via HDMI, both with Windows 10 and with Ubuntu 14.04.5. I have however a problem with its docking station, and just filed a bug against Ubuntu (alsa package 'lenovo-dock) because of sound issues when docked; please see:

Thanks and cheers,

Re: Lenovo P50 - HDMI not working

This is the approach I took and that eventually worked for me. I don't know if all the steps was actually neccesary.

  1. I plugged in my HDMI monitor the first time and it worked right out of the box ... once!
  2. Then I tried updating the Thunderbolt firmware. Tip: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/SF16-T0051. Actually, I had to install the Thunderbolt software first. http://support.lenovo.com/dk/en/downloads/ds105411. That didn't solve my problem.
  3. Then I updated my Nvidia Graphx driver. That didn't solve my problem.
  4. Then I updated my BIOS. http://support.lenovo.com/dk/en/products/Laptops-and-netbooks/ThinkPad-P-Series-laptops/ThinkPad-P50/downloads/DS106108. That worked once, again, but didn'r solve my problem.
  5. Last, I updated my Intel Management Engine firmware. http://support.lenovo.com/dk/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-p-series-laptops/thinkpad-p50/downloads/DS105420.

After the last update I have been consistently been able to plug in HDMI devices with image and sound. As mentioned above, I am not sure if you need to take all of the above steps.

Re: Lenovo P50 - HDMI not working

OK, so I've been dealing with this problem for a while now.   I use this laptop for work, and we have meetings rooms with large displays that use hdmi.   I can only get the port to work less than half of the time.   I've updated everything, but I cannot get thunderbolt firmware to update.   It appears to need a thunderbolt device connected.

How can I update the firmware without a thunderbolt device?  The hdmi displays do not work for this. (tried that already)   Is there some apple device that I should try to borrow?

Any ideas?   Thanks.

**An attached HDMI monitor is required for this to work.**

Apple's Thunderbolt implementation is proprietary and will not work on a ThinkPad.

Please follow exactly the steps documented:

https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/SF16-T0051

If the Thunderbolt SW is not installed and running, it will not work.

I have seen instances where running the FW installation from the automatic installer did not work....that is why I document in detail how to run from a command prompt (with Admin privileges).

Again, this is a firmware install....which is typically more finicky than a standard software installation, so care must be taken to follow the documented steps.

When installed, testing has proven it to resolve HDMI monitor connectivity issues.

Re: Lenovo P50 - HDMI not working

I have followed those instructions to the letter.   With an HDMI monitor connected, running as admin, TB in the system tray...etc.

The firmware updater fails out and states that there are no thunderbolt devices connected.

Can it be any HDMI monitor?   That's my question.

Re: Lenovo P50 - HDMI not working

2016-11-14, 13:54 PM

I have a 1-week-old Lenovo P50 with a non-functioning HDMI port.

I've read and followed the suggestions in all the posts in this thread, including the firmware update of my Thunderbolt Software (it now has version of "16," which is apparently the current version), as directed in the "Solved!" post.

I've rebooted/restarted many times (with and without a device attatched to the HDMI port), but the computer always fails to recongnize a second monitor or projector.

Pretty frustrating for a computer that I otherwise like very much.  If I don't solve this soon, I'm going to have to get a different computer.  I really wanted to like Lenovo again.

Thanks,

Trey

Re: Lenovo P50 - HDMI not working

2016-11-14, 16:11 PM

I connect my P50 to single external monitors using an HDMI => VGA dongle at two locations and to two external monitors, using a docking station, at another location.

The HDMI => VGA connection works 90-95% of the time but I keep having sporadic HDMI issues (~ once/week) When it fails, there's no signal coming out of the HDMI port. The external monitors go into power saving mode and I can only work using the P50's screen. The problem, eventually, resolves by itself, regardless of rebooting, connecting-reconnecting monitors, etc

I don't think this is a driver/software issue. I think this is a hardware problem and I'm not planning to waste my time updating drivers, changing BIOS settings, etc. to see if something only seems to solve the problem. But that's just me. I'll keep monitoring this thread.
