Re: Lenovo P50 - HDMI not working

2016-11-14, 16:19 PM

So I finally got the FW update to work and the hdmi port seems to work 100% of the time now.

The trick for me was to run the upgrade on one of the unlikely times that the monitor was working.

So you need and hdmi monitor connected and working for it to upgrade.  (Not just plugged in, like I originally thought.)

Hope this helps....

I still don't see why Lenovo cannot publish a Linux version. It should be the same firmware, only the installer (a simple script) will differ, or am I wrong?

The first thing I did after unboxing my P50 was deleting Windows from the harddisc.

Now, I am thinking of booting Windows from an external drive once (will this work?) to install the firmware update and fix the HDMI issues.

Same problem here (Win7 x64):

HDMI port is not working at all (Notebook FW is updated).
How to update the thunderbolt firmware when the HDMI port is working never?
Connecting a monitor to the DP- port doesn't help.

Re: Lenovo P50 - HDMI not working

Finally got it running (Fingers crossed)!

The thunderbolt update does the trick.

Updating the firmware was a bit tricky:
I have installed the thunderbolt software for Win10 (I have a Win7 system). Right behind I got a message box that something on my system has to be updated.
Powered down the computer; Switched to discrete graphics

Connected a monitor directly to the notebooks HDMI

Back in Windows I started the thunderbolt- software with admin rights without any further action

Opened a command box with admin rights and started the firmware update with 'c:\drivers\win\Thunderbolt_FW\setup.bat'
After update and reboot I switched back to hybrid graphics...

HDMI is working, but notebook isn't booting in the workstation dock anymore (Stucks at windows welcome screen).

Never had that much trouble with any notebook before... :(

Yes and that now seems to be a stock answer for this despite it not working in many cases.

After following this process a message pops up that there is no thunderbolt software installed.

Several users have commented on the same message.

Thanks for your post OleD

I had everything updated: BIOS (1.35), drivers, all softwares according to Lenovo Companion, updated the device manager drivers (checked one by one), etc, etc, etc

I followed your last advise and updated the Intel Management Engine firmware. Now my external monitor is working!!!

 ===========

UPDATE: If the display is turned off for a long time after inactivity, the external monitor will not switch on again. A reboot is necessary. Will have to keep it ON all the time I guess.  Bummer!

@LENOVO: isnt it time to have this fixed? I have spent more time on this annoying glitch than my previous 15 years with VAIOs and DELLs combined! Just to name a few more things:

1. If BIOS (version 1.35) is set to Discrete Graphics card, all I got was a blank screen with a curso

     - It was IMPOSSIBLE to access the BIOS again after that (tried F1, F2, Fn+F1, F12, Enter, all key combinations...nothing)

     - So I had to remove the backplate and remove the CMOS battery

     - After a few reboots, the BIOS screen came out... finally!

2. You "User Guide" was not reviewed. It mentions a non existing "emergency reset hole". Probably you just copied and pasted from another manual

3. And now this ridiculous display issue that dates back to the beginning of the year! Just have it fixed!!!

Is this related to some particular setting? I have P50 with the M1000M card, but never had a problem since May whatsoever.
