Re: Lenovo P50 - HDMI not working

2016-12-08, 18:51 PM
The only thing I changed from stock settings is the resolution from 4K to 1080p as some programs e.g. SAP GUI and Eclipse are not 4K friendly.

Overall, it is better now as I can use my external screen but, as a workaround, I have to keep the display ON without the auto switch off after XX minutes of inactivity, which is a basic feature.

FYI: my system is P50 / M1000/ 64GB/ 6700/ BIOS 1.35

Re: Lenovo P50 - HDMI not working

2016-12-13, 3:13 AM

Good evening,

I tried to apply the "solved" solution to the "HDMI not working" problem but I'm getting this error message:

- I searched for this error message but I didn't find anything

- There's no TB software on my computer and I only found the FW update on the Lenovo site

Any ideas?

Since I need to have this issue resolved ASAP and I've not been able to find a solution here, I opened a ticket with my company's IT Help Desk., In turn, they will contact IBM/Lenovo (yes, they still work together) and will have the issue fixed (or the laptop replaced)

I'll post the solution here, if applicable.

Re: Lenovo P50 - HDMI not working

2016-12-13, 19:16 PM

I have been fighting this problem for a couple weeks.  I have tried the fixes in previous posts without success.  I have updated the video driver several times without consistent success.  I have had the motherboard replaced without success.  I have run the Lenovo System Update utility and made sure everything was up to date without success.  I have, however, found something that seems to work, at least on my system.

On my computer, the HDMI will work just for several days and then it will all of a sudden it will stop.  The problem is somehow tied to the USB ports/connections.  I have a USB hub attached to one of the ports on the back of the laptop.  If I unplug the USB Hub and then shutdown (not restart) and restart the laptop the HDMI will come back to life.  I can then reconnect the USB Hub and backup drive and the HDMI works just fine, at least until the next time it stops working.

Additionally, connecting a USB backup drive through the USB Hub gave me other issues as well that were consistent and repeatable.  I am going to try replacing the HUB with one from a different manufacturer to see if the HDMI problem permanently goes away.

Re: Lenovo P50 - HDMI not working

My BIOS is version 1.35. When I did that (Switch the Display to Discrete mode), it messed everything. My laptop's screen went totally blank and i could see only the mouse cursor.

Then you say: simply revert to the Hybrid mode => The issue is that the BIOS could not be accessed through the key combination any longer.

End result: I had to remove the CMOS battery to reset the BIOS and I'm still stuck with version 15.2.34.5 of this Thunderbolt Software.

Gosh.... seriously... @Lenovo: stop sitting on your hands on this matter. This is the #1 "Trending Topic" of this Forum for ages. Everybody keeps tinkering on their systems... pulling cable, inserting again, rebooting, shutting down.... checking the lunar calendar, praying to all Gods imaginable... and nothing! Cant you just release a proper solution for that?

Re: Lenovo P50 - HDMI not working

I hope this is my last update on this thread. I was struggling with the Thunderbolt Software update as indicated in Page 17 as the "Solution" for this thread (just click on this link to check it out: Lenovo's Solution from page 17    ) but I managed to have it updated following these detailed steps:

1. My version of the Thunderbolt software was 15.2.34.5 and I couldnt see anything on my external monitor connected to the HDMI port

2. When trying to update, I was getting the message:

7. I booted the computer with HDMI display connected. After the boot, both display were still working. I execute the Thunderbolt update again and now it shows the update screen:

The external HDMI Display seems to be working now. I hope this is not temporary and that this is the final chapter of this ordeal. Hope this steps might also you help some of you guys.

Re: Lenovo P50 - HDMI not working - My Solution

2016-12-15, 16:21 PM

Ok. Since it was taking too long for IT to solve this, I went ahead and updated the TB software, as suggested:

1. Downloaded and installed TB software from Intel (not available from Lenovo for Win 7 64-bit)

2. Updated TB Firmware from Lenovo (n1etf07w)

3. Everything installed correctly:

4. After all that... It WOULDN'T WORK ! (rebooted, connected, disconnected external monitor, etc multiple times)

5. Finally, as recommended previously on this thread, I bought a $20 mini DP to HDMI dongle and connected the external monitor. Voila! It works.

6. All is Ok in the Universe now (end of this story for me. This is just a workaround of course but I won't be spending any more time on this issue)

Two mother board changes and multiple SW/firmware updates have not solved this problem.  I am having Lenovo support escalate the issue to the next level.  I am going to keep pushing Lenovo until this problem gets resolved.

I also was only able to get the updater to work while the HDMI port was also working. In my case I am running two monitors, one off of the miniDP port and one from the HDMI. I had to unplug the miniDP port and then the HDMI port worked. Once it did, I ran the Thunderbolt update utility and this time it flashed correctly. Plugged the miniDP port back in and rebooted and all is working. I hope it stays stable now.

Re: Lenovo P50 - HDMI not working

Update on my problem.  I sent my P50 in for repair and it has been returned with the HDMI now functioning.  I will see if that continues.  The repair summary indicates there were driver issues and that firmware was updated.  Unfortunately, no specifics were given.

I did speak with the repair technician in Memphis and he was able to duplicate the problem.  He indicated that after performing some tests he thought the problem was coneected to the Nvidia driver.  If I had to guess, I think that he uninstalled that driver and reinstalled an updated driver.  I had done this at my end prior to sending it in, but the result did not yield a reliable HDMI port.

So for now, the port is working.  I will update if there is a change.
