Re: Lenovo P50 - HDMI not working

2017-01-06, 15:14 PM

Is this update coming for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS?  I am having the same issue with my HDMI port (intermittent and complete failure).  Or is there a solution posted somewhere for Ubuntu?

Wanted to share that :
I had same issue ; I installed the latest FW as discribed in page 17 of that thread.
Still getting issue sometimes, especially after laptop sleep mode.
One way to get the HDMI to work or to get the output recognized by Thunderbolt software when it happens:
1. Stop the laptop and remove any attached devices : battery/HDMI/USB etc...
2. click 10 times on the power button, and at the 10th, stay on it at least 30 sec.

3. Plug battery and other devices (including the HDMI)

4. Restart the laptop....

So far this worked 100% of teh time.

(tips given by a Support resource ; it is supposed to reinit some low level HW logic or something)

As already mentioned in this thread, to solve this issue once and for all, buy a DisplayPort => HDMI dongle

I bought one on Amazon for $9 and it is working 100% for over a month. You might find even cheaper on AliExpress but keep in mind that there are dongles limited to Full HD resolution (1920 X 1080). If you need to output 4K resolution, get a newer one like this or similar: DP to HDMI dongle

Not the best solution, but it works and will save you a LOT of time and hassle

These instructions are ridiculous for a typical user to follow. I got some kind of error, can't get it to update to version 16, and HDMI still doen't work. Anybody have instructions meant for regular people?

@SO_ANGRY: I know what you mean! I consider myself way above the "typical user" and that was utterly frustrating - reason why I reccommend buying the DisplayPort - HDMI dongle as the easiest/ hassle free solution.

My last post in page 23 has the step by step to update the Thunderbolt firmware. In my case, it didnt resolve 100% of the issues as the HDMI monitor wouldnt turn on 20% of the time after sleep mode.

After much frustration with Thunderbolt failing to update to v. 16, the Intel Management Engine 11.0 Firmware seems to have done the trick! http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-p-series-laptops/thinkpad-p50/downloads/DS105420

Same problems. $3000 laptop and no reliable HDMI. Tried everything but stalled at the following error message when trying to install Thunderbolt software so I can then upgrade firmware. Have tried numerous uninstall/reinstall . Have no Thunderbolt devices available to plug in.

No active thunderbolt controller found in the system or  thunderbolt software is not present in the system . make sure you have thunderbolt software installed . Then connect Thunderbolt device and press OK to retry or press cancel to abort firmware update  process

Hi,

I got it working following this recipe:

I have also no thunderbolt hardware available (No products fitting my needs on the market ;) )

Re: Lenovo P50 - HDMI not working

I followed the steps to update the Thunderbolt Firmware - all nine steps.  Thrice over.  No matter what I do, as soon as I execute the setup.bat file (from an admin-activated command prompt, no less) I get a dialog with the following message:

"No active thunderbolt(tm) controller found in the system or thurderbolt(tm) software is not present in the system.  Make sure you have thunderbolt(tm) software installed.  Then connect thunderbolt(tm) device and press OK to retry or press Cancel to abort firmware upgrade process"

Incidentally, I have no version number listed in the Thunderbolt details page, where the NVM info block should (there's just a large empty square below the other driver version data at the top).

I've ensured my graphics driver is set to discrete in the BIOS. It never was set on hybrid to begin with, but whatever, that's verified.

What is the step I'm missing here that everyone seemed to get? I've went through "Page 17 of this blog" with a fine tooth comb, and cannot see anything that I've missed.

(1) Download n1etf06w.exe - CHECK!

(2) Extract files - CHECK!

(3) Uncheck the box stating "Install Intel(R) Alpine Ridge Thunderbolt Firmware now" - CHECK! Well.. UNCHECK!

(4) Attach an HDMI external monitor - CHECK! Monitor attached via the rear HDMI port directly on the P50, monitor powered on

(5) Verify the Thunderbolt Software is running in the system tray - CHECK! Thunderbolt software running

(6) Open a Command Prompt and 'Run as administrator' - CHECK! CMD with admin privilages

(7) cd C:\DRIVERS\WIN\Thunderbolt_FW - CHECK!

(8) Type 'setup.bat' and hit the 'Enter' key.  This will launch the Thunderbolt FW Update Tool.

SCREEEEECH - this does nothing more than launch a dialog (presumably from the Thunderbold FW Update Tool) that says it cannot find the controller.

Surely someone hit this wall, and figured out a way passed it!
