Re: Lenovo P50 - HDMI not working

2017-02-04, 19:25 PM

Alright, regarding the message above, for anyone who is reading this, I've figured out the problem.

Even though I recieved this unit late 2016, it didn't have the latest BIOS firmware. I ran the Lenovo updator, and simply let it update everything.  After that, the HDMI was working - but I suspect that it would be temporary, like before.  So, I ran the Thunderbolt FW update (as described in this thread), and this time I didn't get the popup message. And the firmware updated just fine! Crossing my fingers hoping the HDMI doesn't crap out - so far so good.

Re: Lenovo P50 - HDMI not working

2017-02-09, 19:52 PM

Hi,

I have the newest Intel Management Software and Thunderbolt Software (v16). Though I can connnect to any HDMi display no problem (so far), my HDMI-connected monitor does not come back to life after the system executes 'power off display after xx minutes' around 50% of the time. Both laptop and the external monitor go black after let's say 20min, later laptop wakes up when I move the mouse, the external display does not. I am willing to try the Thunderbolt FW update.

Does anyone have an access to a working link with the Thunderbolt Firmware update?

The official link given here does not work:

https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/SF16-T0051

I could not find another one (working) either.

This is what my Thunderbolt Software settings section says right now (I guess I am missing the whole bottom section of settings which should have details about NVM Firmware Version).

Any help much appreciated.

Holy crap, you're right. The link is broken now.

I was able to search for:

"n1etf06w.exe"

And the very last last Google link seemed to have the cached path displayed.. as:

https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n1etf06w.exe

Which works, and is indeed on the Lenovo site, but use at your own risk!

As for your monitor power issues - I actually have the same problem, and it coinicded with the HDMI cutting out. I thought it was related to relocating the monitor (LG 25UM56-P), and had opened at ticket with LG.  But now that you mention the possible link to the Thunderbolt issue, maybe that's all related! In which case.. updating it likely won't help you, as I was able to successfully update.. which solved the HDMI issue, but not the fact that my monitor refuses to power on, on wake.

Thank you very much for the link. I downloaded the file and succesfully updated the firmware.

I have found yet another file (n1etf07w.exe) online here:

http://www.driversforlenovo.com/download-lenovo/p50-laptop-thinkpad-drivers-free/

I have not tested it though, maybe someone will have use of it at some point.

Time will tell If this helps with the issues I have been having (external monitor not waking up/disconneting after all screens turn off due to the 'turn off' screen timer going off).

Anyway, this is how my Thunderbolt software settings page look like now:

Unfortunately, this did not resolve my issues.

Great job Lenovo - P50 has been on the market for months and you still can't fix it: Unreliable HDMI, no WiFi when using bluetooth on 2.4Ghz and erratic fan behavior.

Impressive that I never have any serious issues with smartphones - but laptops, even after decades of development, are still just disspointing - including top models from Lenovo and Dell.

In regard to broken download link for the NVM firmware update, I have an ongoing thread about the issue here -> https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Feedback-on-the-support-site/Broken-download-link-for-P50-Thunderbolt-3-NVM-firmware-Update/m-p/3569089

TL;DR is that supposedly Lenovo is working on it, but as of today the download has not been restored. As it also appears that Lenovo is revamping the system managing the download pages (the way things are presented changed in the last day or so) it may take them a bit to sort things out but I am cautiously optimistic.

Is there a way to run this Thunderbolt FW update if the laptop is running Linux?

P.S. I've tried mini-display to HDMI and that did not seem to work either.

Setup is Lenovo P50 running Redhat 6, display is Lenovo LS2421p Wide.

Any updates to this? I recently purchased a P50 and could not extend display with debian stretch. Finally ended up installing Xubuntu. The DP port is working (very flaky), but nothing at all on HDMI.

Is this firmware now available to install from linux (assuming, that will fix my display issues).

There is still no release after one year?  My P50 HDMI output just stopped working today and driver updates and laptop restarts haven't fixed the issue.  I can drive an external monitor using the mini-Display port but the maximum resolution of 1920x1080 is suboptimal.  Will there be a fix soon?
