Lenovo P50 with a 2tb nvme and 1tb SSD

2021-09-14, 11:59 AM

I tried installing a pcie nvme 2tb drive in my P50 thinkpad and when I turned the workstation on it did not boot up properly.  I had to re-install the OS on the nvme 2tb drive and it did not recognize the SSD drive anymore.

Did I do something wrong?  I wanted to install the pcie nvme 2tb drive as an extra drive and leave the OS on the SSD.  Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Hello BLenvo,

Welcome to Lenovo Community

In adding extra drive for your ThinkPad P50, make sure that you have the compatible parts.
You can check the Hardware maintenance manual and the parts look up site.
For tips and other details, you may refer to the related topics here at the forums:

Just to be clear, when you refer to your "SSD" are you talking about a 2.5" SATA SSD drive? As opposed to the new M.2 NVMe you installed in one of the open M.2 bays using the proper adapter tray?

This was a brand new empty M.2 drive? What brand and model?

After you physically installed the drive, did you go into the BIOS and confirm that the Startup -> boot device sequence still showed your original 2.5" SSD as above the new M.2 NVMe SSD in the list? It might have shown "Boot Manager" on that SSD, but the device itself should still be in front of the now newly populated M.2 NVMe0 slot (I assume you installed the new NVMe card in NVMe0, but maybe NVMe1?).

Do you still have the original SATA SSD just as it was before the surgery, so that if you remove the M.2 NVMe drive you will once again be able to boot to the SATA SSD as before?

I'm just trying to figure out why you couldn't boot the machine, just because of the now present new empty M.2 NVMe SSD.

Also, if you did a fresh install to the M.2 NVMe what do you mean "it did not recognize the SSD anymore"?  What does that mean? Do you mean you don't see drive letters you expect, for the several actual partitions that are actually on the old SSD? Or do you not even physically see the DISK drive when you run DISKMGMT.MSC?  Please clarify what you mean here.

For what is it worth I have tried Samsung 850 Pro, Crucial P1 and P2 2T drives in P50 without any issues.

I am currently putting together a P51 with a 512GB Boot NVMe, 2TB Data NVMe and 4TB SATA SSD.
