Lenovo P51 Xeon E3 1506M v6 constantly at 3.8 GHz

2021-03-24, 0:19 AM

Hi,

I have P51 with Xeon E3 1506M v6. I got it refurbished and just started using it.

I noticed CPU constantly been at 3.7-3.8 GHz and frequency never drops.

I am pretty sure it's not normal. changing profiles in BIOS from performance to battery powered  did not change a thing. CPU is still all time high.

Power package seem to be at 7-8W so it's not really hot but this behaviour is worrying me.

Did other users noticed something similar?

Is there solution so CPU will idle at lower frequency?

I found culprit apart from BIOS performance setting it's a Win 10 power mode. slider was to the right on best performance and in this position it prevented CPU from idling at lower clock. Moving it to middle position allowed CPU frequency to go down. I think it something to do with drivers/power management settings. have not seen it on any of iCore CPUs i have encountered yet.

Anyway. Problem solved.

Latest BIOS 1.54. check.

Latest Windows/drives check

BIOS settings reset to default check

CPU won't go below 3.63 and usually 3.75-3.8 GHz
