Lenovo P51s Power Adapter

2020-12-29, 16:31 PM

Hey all,

We have a employee who uses a Lenovo P51s workstation and has been using the usb-c port to charge it. I saw online that this isn't supposed to work but it does. I was going to order a slim-tip power adapter but can't find the correct one.

I keep seeing online that we need a 170w Adapter but the website shows a 65W and the part number is also for 65W, but compatible shows USB-C's work with this computer.

So what charger does this laptop actually need?

Where?

According to ThinkPad_P51s_Spec.PDF this model comes with either 65W slim tip AC adapter or 65W USB Type-C AC adapter. Either charger will work. My personal preference would be a USB-C model since it's more likely to be compatible with future PCs.

A third option would be a monitor that has an integrated USB-C hub like the ThinkVision P24h-20. This connects to the P51s via a single USB-C cable. That supplies power from the monitor to the system. The monitor also has Ethernet and some extra USB ports. The monitor is a bit more expensive than non-USB-C monitors. But when you factor in the savings from not needing a separate AC charger and possibly a docking station it's worth considering.

You are probably confusing a P51 vs. a P51s.  A P51 has a high-power model "H" CPU which draws 45 watts by itself and has larger GPU options.  The P51s has a low-power CPU (15-watts maximum).

So which charger do I need to the P51s? Also is that the same cord used for the docking station, as we currently are just using that same one.

For the P51s, either 65W slim tip AC adapter or 65W USB Type-C AC adapter. For the docking station, it depends on the model. Some models may even have an AC charger built in.

Thank you, I think I may been forgetting the dock is different. But I just remembered the issue with her USB-C one was it was only charger one of the two batteries.

Also the screen adapter seems to toggle when plugging in the charger. I had to change the refresh rate to fix that.
