Lenovo P53 performance impacted after BIOS update

2020-09-07, 23:27 PM

Hello to everyone.

Hope everything is good for you.

I recently got this update through Vantage "Intel Management Engine Firmware (Windows 10 Version 1903 or Later) - 10 [64] - 12.0.68.1606" and I noticed a performance impact on graphics.

It is most notorious on gaming, playing a relatively old game (NFS: Most Wanted 2012). Running at 3840x2160 resolution on the Quadro RTX 4000 wasn't an issue before, but now it's behaving pretty "janky" dropping frames below 30. Running it on Discrete Graphics, doesn't solve it.

What could I do to diagnose the issue?

I checked out the change log of the firmware update, and these are the notes:

  • Fixed issue where “Optane cannot work after BIOS recovery”.
  • Fixed issue with “Kernel DMA protection”.
  • Fixed issue where Thunderbolt boot was disabled after POST time improvement.
  • Updated BIOS code for security fixes.
  • Updated ME Firmware to 12.0.68.1606
  • Update EC Firmware to v3.25.

Full specs of my P53:

  • 9th Gen Intel® Core™ i9-9880H with vPro™ (2.30GHz, up to 4.80GHz with Turbo Boost, 8 Cores, 16MB Cache)

New insight while diagnosing the problem.

When it's dropping frames 3D graph goes up to 100%... this might be as well a software bug, right? I updated the Quadro driver to the latest version (downloaded from NVIDIA site) as well to see if this fixed it.
