Re:Lenovo System Update Service (32 bit)

2021-02-09, 12:24 PM

Removing the offending application is hardly a solution to the problem. The Lenovo System Update Service (the legacy one, not the Vantage one) ships with every standard Lenovo image as far as I'm aware. Right this moment this software bug is wasting kilowatts or even megawatts of energy all across the globe. Many users won't even notice the problem.

Yes, you can technically stop this service from eating up your CPU by killing it, disabling it, or removing it, but the problem is that SUService.exe runs in an infinite loop and consumes an entire CPU core. Without a patch to the software, no other fix is satisfactory.

Please, remove the "Solved" from this thread. The problem is not solved.

The OP/thread-starter marked their own test/observation post as the solution to this thread (and their issue). That is their prerogative.

I don't see any options to remove the solved status of the thread.  For myself the solution is sufficient.  I know how to check for updates when I want them, so removing an automatic updater doesn't feel like a loss.  If there is a bug in the software and Lenovo is ignoring it, then removing the unnecessary software IS the solution. Even if it's not the one you want.

I had this problem across 3x P51 and one P53 today. Actually the problem when away for me by running Lenovo System update maually one time while Lenuvo update process was hogging 16% CPU. After the manual LSU invocation the "Lenovo System Update Service (32 bit)" went back to normal. Can you try if this works for you too?

Sorry for this trouble.  We removed the version of System Update (5.07.0113.0) that causes this problem, and re-released the previous version (5.07.0110.0) that doesn't have this problem.  So you'll see 5.07.0110.0 on the website as of this moment:  https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds012808

In addition to this, we are preparing a new version (5.07.0117.0) which fixes this bug.  So that people who downloaded and installed 5.07.0113.0 will be able to update to the fix version as soon as it's released, hopefully later this week.

Thanks. I spoke on the phone with a Lenovo rep but it seems they are unaware that this is a software issue. The rep i spoke to took me through a series of tasks including: -Reset the power using the a "power reset" at the bottom of the laptop -Reset some BIOS settings -Uninstall and reinstall Lenovo Power Manager After this he suggested i take the laptop to a Lenovo Service centre and have them "replace the fan". Clearly this is not a fan issue. I am considering uninstalling Lenovo Service Update all together but i am worried that the bug fix you mentioned will be pushed through the service itself . For now i am force ending task on the application via Task Manager on start up.

Re:Lenovo System Update Service (32 bit)

This is all well and good, but I have three company laptops that were affected by this issue.

I have uninstalled the system update version that was installed (5.07.0113.0)

Downloaded the current published version from the website (5.07.0110.0)

As soon as the System Update application is run, it immediately prompts to update itself.

Guess what version gets installed... 5.07.0113.0. And the high CPU usage bug is back.

For now, I have disabled the System Update service is the services control panel because I need to send these laptops out today.

Please remove the 5.07.0113.0 version from the auto-update service as well as your public website until you have a working patch.

Agree with poster above: Please remove the 5.07.0113.0 version from whatever clients are looking at for updates.

We are looking into this urgently.  It was supposed to be removed yesterday.  Another way to avoid this problem is to update to the 5.07.0117.0 version that will be released to the website tomorrow, and to the auto-update server shortly after.  I already have this version and have made it available here:    systemupdate507-2021-02-10.exe

EDIT

Fix version of System Update (5.07.0117.0) has been formally released here:   https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds012808-lenovo-system-update-for-windows-10-7-32-bit-64-bit-desktop-notebook-workstation
