Lenovo W520 and Autodesk certification/compatibility

2011-04-19, 21:03 PM

Hello everyone!

I am interested in bying a W520 with Nvidia 2000m graphics.

I managed to do a research and I realized that there are until now no performance drivers for Autocad or 3ds max nor is the W520 in the "mobile workstations" certification list of Autodesk software.

Considering that this is a brand new machine (and a really expensive one) I would like to share some information/experience regarding the compatibility with Cad software. Am I going to have any problems using Autodesk software untill the performance drivers are released?(hope this happens soon)

According to Lenovo at least, (http://shop.lenovo.com/us/ww/pdf/w520_datasheet.pdf) it should be ISV certified.

The Quadro 2000M isn't in the certified list, though, but I assume it will be soon. I wouldn't buy it until then, though, since if I was investing 1800 dollars in a mobile workstation I need to know what it will do now and not in the future.

The Quadro 2000M is a really new card, though, so it might take a month or two for them to get the drivers out- on the other hand, the W520 itself should be a bit cheaper when that time comes.

Lenovo doesn't have a good track record when it comes to certifying driver updates, though (you can't install the ones from nVidia, or at least you can't on a T510). This is visible by the fact that if you search up a certain number in the nVidia driver release notes from Lenovo you can figure out the revision of the graphics drivers from nVidia- just look at the last 5 numbers disregarding the decimal point.

So from 8.17.12.6763 we get the version of Lenovo's driver package: 267.63.

This is hardly the newest driver (newest one is 270.61).

Hi!

Thank you for the reply!

So, what you are suggesting is to wait until Lenovo releases the performance drivers for Autodesk software?

Considering that the W520 is beeing advertised in Nvidia site,as a professional workstation that has the new Quadro cards I assume that  in the future they (or Lenovo) have to support any driver releases for those people that invest in these professional cards/workstations.

But for now , this can be only an assumption...
