Looking for 1.5TB drive 12.5mm high for my caddy or internal bay

2014-05-14, 7:38 AM

w520, have run out of room on my Hgst750. I have a caddy in the optical bay that will hold 12.5mm. Internal bay height the same?

Who makes a 1.5TB this height -- available now?

Just get a standard 9mm drive and a couple of Thinkpad rubber rails.

Re: Looking for 1.5TB drive 12.5mm high for my caddy or internal bay

True, that would be easiest. However, I have not found a drive that is either 9mm or 12.5mm that offers significantly more storage than the 750Gig unit now in my w520. I hope someone here in the Forum knows of such a drive. However, Amazon and Newegg don't have any possibilities in these sizes.

To be clear: I already have an 256Gig SSD in the original drive bay, the HGST 750gig in the caddy, and an older 80Gig Intel mSATA on the PCIe slot below the keyboard. So far the 80Gig has served well as a small capacity but special-purpose intake drive for shooting tethered photography, scratch versions during editing, etc.

I was hoping to jump to at least a 1.5TB but we seem not to be "there" yet in platter density/thin housings.

All suggestions welcome.

I was reading up on these 2TB drives, and apparently the easiest (safest?) way to obtain these drives is to get these enclosures here and pop the drive out, as per the comments. Alas, it means voiding the warrant though.

Thanks for adding the results of your search. For some reason neither item was included in my own Amazon search or the Newegg list I generated.

As a guess both of these might have come out of enclosures purchased by an operation that takes out the drives for resale. ...especially the 2TB unit which when represented on Amazon as a loose drive shows that all the three sellers are not selling me anything ever designed for retail in any form: one says the only warranty is with them, the Amazon reseller. (and that price is $70 higher -- for the privilege?) I had been reading about the practice and its downside.

I am hoping to avoid this; perhaps a few more months, a year, will find the same slim units on the more open market and guaranteed by their respective manufacturers. For now I will pass, then, and do some more aggressive culling of content off into off-line cloud storage.

Again thanks for the further search results.

A 9.5mm thick 2TB Samsung drive is described in an article/announcement published on a site for the gaming community  (Samsung is now a Seagate division.) The article ends:

"The Spinpoint M9T hard drive is currently available in the Samsung Portable product line, which includes the M3 Portable and P3 Portable external drives, as well as with select partners. Pricing is not available, as this drive is sold directly to equipment manufacturers.

Rats!

So this is why the only drives advertised are coming out of other gear.

Yes, and it's quite unfortunate, as I have the same reservations as you regarding getting one for my W520.

But I would very much like to get one nevertheless, as it's not a OS drive... and not overly expensive either.
