Making a P51 faster

2020-09-28, 12:22 PM

Hello,

I would like to know if I could make my P51 (i7 7820HQ)  significantly faster by replacing/expanding the stock RAM (16GB, 2400MHz). Also, what is the max RAM speed supported by this model?

Thank you in advance.

In between I have found that the limit is 2400MHz. But what about the first question?

I don't have a P series machine but I have to think the answer depends very much on your workload.  Number crunching, image processing... possibly,  Interweb cat videos... not so much.

Joking aside, if you will indicate what sort of things you will be running, others here with similar situations may be able to address your question.

The limit is 2400, but the speed depends not only on frequency, but also on CAS - the less the better.

I have set the memory at native frequency 2666 and it works fine at 2400.

Most users don't need more than 16GB so adding RAM doesn't help.  People who do full-motion video editing, CAD, and other memory-demanding tasks might be better off with more than the maximum 64GB, so would prefer the 128GB available in later models.  There is no one answer that fits everyone.  I think CAS latency differences would only very slightly help a speed test, but would have no noticeable effect on any real work.

What Gpu do you have in your P51?

Depending on workload 32GB is great, I would also install xtu, max out the multipliers+undervolt, even afterburner and gpu overclock.

If you use SSD then a NVMe disk will speedup IO. RAM speed limited by chipset. Make sure you are in dual channel mode and forget about it.
