Model differences for W510???

2010-09-07, 3:15 AM

When purchasing the W510 there are 3 default configuration listings on the Lenovo site, the last one being "Enhanced W510" but if you go through the purchase process all 3 are exact same models 4318CTO (the CTO being custom order) but all are 4318.  Does that mean they're all the same motherboards just different base configuration and configurable through the lenovo shopping site only?

Basically I want to know if I purchase the non "Enhanced" model I can still upgrade to 16GB using DDR3 PC10600.  Also want to be able to upgrade the CPU myself so want to make sure they're the same computer just configurations are different based on which link you choose.  I will still end up choosing a i7-720QM cpu for the lowest end quad core for backup so I know I can at least upgrade the CPU since it's PGA988 and not soldered BGA1288.  I just want to be sure the motherboards aren't different for some reason between the different versions.

Thanks for any help from the forums.

As far as I know, they all have the same motherboards. They are there to showcase three different levels of performances and prices.

As far as I understand there are at least four different motherboard versions. First you have the RAID and non-RAID variants. Then there seems to have been an update to the original motherboard design as can be witnessed by the BIOS updates.

But they're not distinguished by the "Enhanced", "Elite", etc. labels on the website...

WHAT!!!???  I even asked the customer rep online and said the 3 links were just for different configurable options.

Oh brother, I bought the regular model instead of the Enhanced with plans to upgrade the system myself.  My system arrives Wednesday, I really hope there's no difference or I'm going to be really upset.  This last week the middle option even allowed for the i7-920XM upgrade, just no 16GB RAM although I'm under the idea you can do that on your own.  I don't know about the RAID since the W510 only has 1 HD anyways.

You can use an Ultrabay adapter to insert a 2nd HDD in the W510. There is a RAID version of the W510 and at least on user on these boards reported having it.
