Multiple Monitors on a W500

2008-08-10, 2:29 AM

Hello,

I would like to know if I could connect two external 24” 1920 x 1200 displays to the new W500 and be able to extend the desktop to both of these displays and the laptop´s.

That way I could extend my work to 3 displays.

I need to get the full 1920 x 1200 on the two external displays and on the laptop.

I imagine I could use a splitter for the VGA port on the laptop or a splitter for the DVI port on a docking station.

Thanks.

The V5700 in the W500 has two internal display engines so you can only use 2 displays at a time native from the graphics chip, so two external monitors or one external + the notebook LCD.

BUT you could use something like the Matrox DualHead2Go and split the output of the VGA output to two monitors (http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/).  The only issue there is it is sometimes a pain to get the laptop driver to output 3840x1200 since they are sometimes limited to certain resolutions, but it can work.

Or you could try one of those USB 2.0 to video solutions but the performance on that monitor is not going to be pretty.  If you are just using office apps on that monitor it could be acceptable to you.  Most of them do not do go up to 1920x1200 but this one says it does:  http://www.usbgear.com/computer_cable_details.cfm?sku=USBG-SVGA-II&cats=169&catid=125%2C106%2C169

Thanks very much Todd for the advice. The Matrox DualHead2G0 Digital sounds like a good solution. They say the ATI FireGL V5700 is compatible and gives 2 x 1920 x 1200 maximum resolution. So it should work. I hope the W500 driver will work. If any one knows if the laptop´s driver will output 3840x1200 without problems, please comment. Thanks again.

Is is possible to use any of the port replicators offered by Lenovo to accomplish?  I would also like to have two external monitors in addition to my laptop monitor.

Thank you

You can't use two external + the internal simultaneously without 3rd-party hardware.  The internal video system can only drive two displays simultaneously.  You pick if you want 2 external or 1 + the internal LCD.  IF you want a 3rd display you need another video card.
