New Lenovo W530 SLOW booting

2013-10-26, 17:54 PM

New W530 Type 2436-CTO with Win 7 Pro, 16gb RAM, 256gb SSD.  This is my second W530

Problem when I boot is it boots very quickly to the Welcome screen and then instead of going to the Win 7 Home screen, the screen goes dark except for the cursor and stays dark with hard drive activiity for about 45 to 55 seconds before the home screen pops up.  After than the computer runs as normal and very fast.

Some thing in the boot sequence must be the problem.  I did all the Windows updates, MS updates and Lenovo updates.  I am mainly a  user so any help needs to be specific with detail directions.  Hate to send it back when it all works perfectly except it takes near two minutes to boot.

Last W530 boot like lightning - Please help me

Uninstalled Rapid Boot but still goes to a black screen for 50-60 seconds after welcome screen.

Any other suggestions?

Well, the main thing that's happening between entering your password on that Welcome screen and finally seeing the Windows desktop is from Windows itself.  And that includes initializing the desktop, examining the network connection arrangement and trying to acquire an IP from your router/modem or whatever, and beginning the auto-launching all of the software identified in your Startup folder or via the Startup tab in MSCONFIG.

So if the machne boot process from cold power-off to Welcome is fast, and the machine runs fast and correctly after eventually getting to the Windows desktop (after a strange minute of black screen), and the only problem you observe is the 1-minute required to actually auto-launch all of your Windows and Lenovo startup programs, then it really would help if we could see a list of those programs that get auto-launched.

Could be from Microsoft, or Lenovo, or other software products you've installed.  Certainly possible some could be un-checked so that their activation occurs only on first-time-use, with no real harm or performance hit after that.  Others might be un-checked because you never use them.  Don't know, without seeing the list.

But it could be something shown through MSCONFIG's STARTUP tab, and screenshots of the contents for all currently checked entries posted here would be helpful for us to make a suggestion.  Please spread the first two columns so that we can see (1) the name of the startup item, and (2) the name of the vendor/manufacturer.  For the time being the actual command is not important.  We'll be able to understand what your W530 shows, and why it is any different in Welcome->Desktop performance than my own W530 where I've installed my own 512GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD to replace the original 512GB spinner I got with the laptop from Lenovo.

Incidentally, my own W530 takes about 5 seconds to go from the Welcome screen to the Windows desktop once I press ENTER after typing my password.  However it does take another 25 seconds or so for all of the auto-launch programs specified in my own MSCONFIG to begin and eventually stabilize (along with the taskbar and desktop icons finally stabilizing) so that the desktop is now truly "idle".

The other issue going on after Welcome and before Desktop deals with trying to establish the wired or wireless connection.  Is your laptop connected wired or wireless?  Any issues you suspect there?

Are you running the W530 standalone, or in a dock?  Any other USB or wireless/BlueTooth devices in use?  External monitor?

When I have had slow booting problems, I have found help via a web search for 'diagnose slow boot times Windows 7', or the like.

At the stage where you are having the long delay, there should be Event Logs listing how long each step in the boot process is taking, and whether that is a change from the previous time the computer booted.

Here is a guide I have found helpful:

http://itexpertvoice.com/home/what%E2%80%99s-taking-so-long-how-to-fight-slow-startup-times-in-windows-7/

^^ It walks you through looking at the Event Logs for particular types of messages, especially related to new delays in startup.

Hope you find your issue and get it fixed.
