New P15 Gen1 - Unexpected immediate shutdowns

2021-04-21, 6:31 AM

Hello,

I had immediate shutdown issues twice:

  1. For the first time during my work, my machine just shut down immediately, for unknown reason.
  2. For the second time last night because I'm leaving it running 24/7.

In EvenViewer I can see: "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."

I usually work in the quiet mode, so it's kind of batter mode.

My machine:

  • Lenovo ThinkPad P15 Gen1
  • CPU i7-10875H
  • RAM: 80GB = 2x8 + 2x32
  • SSD: 500GB + 2T
  • OS: WIndows 10 Pro

Hardware scan In Lenovo Vantage shows everything's fine.

Let me know if you need anything more that may be helpful to make an investigation.

Hardware and OS are up to date.

What can be wrong?

Help!

Hi PaulAndTheBrain,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Try checking the CPU temperature in programs like CPU-Z to see if the device shut down due to overheating.

In the event all is fine on the temperature front, then it could be incompatible drivers or corrupt files on the Operating System, which is not uncommon.

Try the following steps:

Perform an DISM, SFC and CHKDSK scan designed to fix Windows file corruption.
- Press Windows key + R to open up a Run dialog box.
- Then, type “cmd” and press Ctrl + Shift + Enter to open up an elevated Command Prompt.
- When prompted by the UAC (User Account Control), choose Yes to grant admin privileges.

In the elevated Command Prompt, type the following command to initiate an SFC scan:

  • dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

**Note: This utility will replace any corrupted Windows file with fresh copies downloaded from Microsoft’s server. It’s important that you have a stable internet connection before initiating this scan.

Then run:

  • sfc /scannow
  • Perform a restrt of the computer, then run the following command:
  • chkdsk /f C:  or just chkdsk

**Note: This utility will perform an analysis on your disk and repair any errors it manages to find. Keep in mind that you need to change C to your drive letter if your OS is located somewhere else.

Hope this helps

Regards

Voithos

Hi Voithos

Will it only replace broken files or maybe also reset some settings or windows configs?

I don't want to revert any windows configuration or software so I would like to ensure it's only for fixing broken things if there are any.

I will try your suggestion on the weekend.

Thanks!

There is also crush dump:

What can we check in those reports?

I will scan my OS for the broken files but maybe we could check here something more meanwhile?

I did few changes:

  • uninstalled HWINFO64 because I noticed it loaded some drivers, so I wanted to get rid of them
  • uninstalled Process Explorer for the same reason

Now I will scan the disks.
