Re: New W510 - High Pitched Whine/Sqeal Using Battery

Even while using a 90w power supply, or extended life settings on your battery mode?

I think the resolution is a motherboard revision?

Not sure ... I'm running latest bios and I've just had my system board swapped out so that I have the RAID option now.

With both system boards I did not and do not have a problem.

Hello Everyone - this issue is definitely a design issue with the machine. I had the motherboard swapped and had the processor swapped. Then finally had a replacement machine sent.

Same issue - none of those things fixed the problem. Battery - Hard Drive could be the issue but there is no fix in sight.

For what it's worth -- my replacement system does not squeal at all.  My first system was almost unbearable unless I was on a full 135w power supply.

I'm experiencing the same high-pitched noise when my ThinkPad's on battery and noticed that I can immediately turn it off / on by starting / stopping music playback. The speakers don't even have to be enabled but can also be muted for this to have any effect.

This and don820's post make it hard to believe that this cannot be fixed at all.

@don820: What mainboard do you have?

How do I check?  I didn't realize there were different main boards.  (I have a 4318-CTO if that's what you mean).

Sorry, I do not use Windows so I don't know where to get that information from if it doesn't appear in the device manager.

Alternatively you can also have a look at http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=look-warnty where you can see your device's parts in the next step. You should find it under something like "FRU PLANAR WORKSTATION".

Today, I had to remove the keyboard for some other reason and tried to locate the component the squealing is coming from. It's definitely somewhere in the lower left corner and seems to be irregular and something mechanical. Another (stable) high pitch originates from where the DIMMs are.
