2011-04-18, 0:33 AM

Hello,

I am new to the forum and new to lenovo.

Just started setting up my brand new w520 and the Fn+Home/End keys dont work to control display brightness.

If you are installing Windows from scratch, you will be able to adjust the screen brightness after installing the power management driver, power mgr, hotkeys, etc.

But I don't think Windows is being installed from scratch.

So you've tried pressing Fn + End (or Fn + Home) to change the brightness?

Have you also tried going into Control Panel>Power Options and adjusting the Brightness slider down at the bottom of that page?

What happens on screen when you press Caps Lock? Does a little black-and-white icon appear?

Thanks to JamesZ for moving this thread. And thanks for the replies.

I did a series of system restore(s) and the hotkeys (Fn+Home/End) work fine this morning.

I want to say it was the x-rite update for the screen color calibrator, but i wont know until i run it again; which I am afraid to do so. If x-rite is the culprit, then the color calibrator was a total waste of money.

Truth be told told, the screen looks better without running the calibrator. It gave a "green push" to blacks and darker colors. But that is a different issue.

Anyone having a similar issue with the hotkeys after calibrating the screen?

@johnt7225,

Appreciate if you could try running TVSU and Windows Update to ensure all the drivers are installed.

Also is X-Rite a default software which comes with the W520? (I am unable to confirm this as I do not have a W520 to test on) ...

If X-Rite is the one acting up and causing the screen brightness adjustment to not work, I would need to escalate this to engineering.

Thanks Johnt725.

@JamesZ,

I am now up to date Windows updates (no Lenovo updates available), and I ran X-Rite again. The hot keys for display brightness work now.

X-Rite was preinstalled on the w520.

The only "glitch" that I have is that during startup the display brightness starts at 12 (out of 15) but then automatically jumps to my previous setting. I figure it would startup at my previous setting. Is that normal?

NOTE:

I restored Windows to before the X-Rite and it still does the brightness level variation "glitch" at startup. Can anyone verify if this is normal?

Please let me know if I should consider returning the machine before my grace period runs out. I have had the laptop for almost a week now.

Thank you.

Yes, I'm having same problem intermittently on my W520.

Sometimes after resume, display gets stuck on dim, FN+Home or FN+END buttons do NOTchange screen brightnes.

Other FN key combinations continue to function normally, but when changing volume I don't see volume level displayed on screen. I end up rebooting to fix the problem, after a couple days the problem repeats again. While I was typing this message, I realized that I can change the screen brightness after most recent resume (I did restart some lenovo services in services.msc) before putting laptop to sleep, but I still don't see on screen display about volume level or brightness levels (1-10 or 1-15).

I should also mention that I'm using discrete graphics option in BIOS (using NVIDIA QUADRO alone, Intel GPU is disaled).

@ibmford,

Appreciate if you can check the following if the system is to date on its drivers.

BIOS: 1.06
Power Manager: 3.52
Power Management driver: 1.62
Hotkeys: 3.33.0002

Thinkpad Power Manager version is 3.45, Thinkvantage software update reports most recent version available is 3.48. version 3.52 is not mentioned.

Power manager driver version is 1.62

Bios verson reported is 1.06

On a different thread ColonelONeill suggested closing and opening the lid (LCD panel OFF and ON) and after reopning the lid I'm able to change screen brightness using FN key combo(HOME, END).

I'm having this problem both in optimus, and discrete GPU (NVIDIA) only modes. Changing display settings in BIOS does not help.
