Re: New W520 cant adjust screen brightness!

2011-05-04, 0:12 AM

I have a W520 with the color sensor/calibrator. (The X-Rite/PANTONE software supports that.)

I installed via System Restore to mSATA/mini-PCI SSD and then grabbed updates. I haven't had any issues with the hotkeys. Windows doesn't seem to load the default color management profiles at startup, but I haven't googled that yet.

Re: New W520 cant adjust screen brightness!

Yesterday I've updated the power manager to version 3.52, The problem persisists. Closing the lid and opening right after allows me to change brightness again. At the same time I hear a system beep similar to the one you hear when you plug a device or usb drive. i assume this is notificaton that LCD panel has registered.

I see many drivers for W520 is buggy. As if the product has been rushed out the door with attitude "we'll patch it later"

@ibmford,

Try uninstalling both Power Manager, Power Management Driver, reboot then install power manager and power management driver.

What other bugs are you facing with the W520?

Re: New W520 cant adjust screen brightness!

This is TERRIBLE!

Last night I closed the lid on my laptop and left it, in the morning I found that system crashed unexpectedly right after I closed the lid. I have uninstalled both thinkpad power manager and driver this morning. I intend to run without power manager for a while to see if there's improvement in stability. This shutdown has happpened before and I thought I was dreaming.

"what other problems are you experiencing?"

Audio on this laptop is very bad.  Connexant smart audio noise cancellation and lenovo keyboard noise cancellation conflict with each other. Microphone location is too close to the bottom of the screen picking up fan noise and keyboard noise. Speakers are very weak.

When using trackpoint for scroll only it sometimes looses its settings. End task process SynTPEnh.exe and relaunch fixes the problem.

Occasionally on screen volume and brightness info disappears; I have to restart service "lenovo hotkey client loader" to display volume level and brightness level again.

@ibmford,

If you are using any 3rd party RAM, try removing them, close the lid so the laptop goes into hibernate or suspend and see if it still crashes.

A case has been raised to engineering about the X120e and X220 unable to adjust screen brightness after hibernate or sleep mode. I will include the W520 into the case as well.

Also for the audio issues which you are facing,

Can you try changing the profile to "VOIP mode" and "Private Chat" and see if it helps.

Yeah, this happens to me quite a bit on my W510. You're the only one I've noticed having the same problem. I haven't found any solution yet. My sleep function will just crash my computer right after closing the lid and I don't know why.

Could the issue be the closing of the lid? Would this happen if you selected Sleep from Windows, then closed the lid after the process was complete? I've never tried, but it might be worth investigating.

Re: New W520 cant adjust screen brightness!

My "close lid" action has been set to "do nothing". I always use power button to put the laptop "sleep/standby" mode or the keyboard shortcut combo FN+F4. When the problem happened I closed the lid, and did not put the computer to sleep, it was ON. I suspect the power manager and hard drive shock sensor had something to do with it. I reduced hard drive airbag sensitivity to minimum. I resintalled the power manager and driver after completely uninstalling first and rebooting. I had to resintall power manager otherwise my microphone mute button and other hotkeys would not work.

As for sound card and audio issues and SKYPE voip calls, etc: I had to upgrade connexant driver to "8.32.23.0" otherwise SKYPE calls would crash saying "sound card not detected" 5 seconds after initiating a call. I disabled keyboard noise suppression service in services.msc. I set smart audo manager to VOIP and conference call mode, in private call mode sounds are more muffled.

To improve sound output and speaker volume: enable smart EQ and set it to custom, increase each signal output level to 80 percent onall EQ sliders. This will improve the speaker audio playback, but don't expect anything with base to sound deep.

Re: New W520 cant adjust screen brightness!

Regarding microphone noise cancellation: Lenovo Keyboard Noise Reduction service and Connexant's smart audio noise reduction overlap eachother. This double filter effect is degrading the microphone audio recording quality. It's like making a photocopy of a document, and then making another photocopy from the second document. It's like scanning a picture, then printing the scanned image and then rescanning the print out. The result is a distorted lower quality image.

Also, the microphones should be relocated from bottom of the LCD screen to top of the screen next to the camere in future generations of laptops. Currrent location of microphone is too close to the keyboard and cooling fan that results in noise distortion. What was the design engineering THINKing? Is there a chance I can help you design a better laptop? I'm really passionate about good design and ergonomics.

Feel free to relocate this post whereever you may see fit.

I dunno; I've never had a problem with fan noise showing up on the microphones in any significant amounts. Keyboard noise is there, but I don't think it changes much with relocation as I still hear it with some laptops with the microphones on top of the display.
