No format option on optical disks

2021-07-26, 9:30 AM

Hi, I have a problem with my external blu-ray writer on my Thinkpad P1 Gen 2. I haven't used it for some time but now I have no format option in the Windows Explorer context menu. I can format disks by typing format x: where x is the drive letter of the writer but it used to work ok so I'm not sure why it stopped. I connected it to an older laptop (also running Windows 10) which hasn't been updated for some time & the format option shows up in the context menu so it would appear that the drive is not the problem. Any help would be most appreciated.

I have now found the solution by searching for unable to drag & drop files to a BD-RE disk. The attached text file shows the solution for anybody else that comes across this difficulty.

Hello,

It has been a while since I have worked with optical media, but have you checked to see if there is any additional third-party software on the older laptop that is not present on the ThinkPad P1 Gen 2 laptop?  Perhaps that needs to be installed on the ThinkPad P1 Gen 2 in order to get it to recognize writable BD-R/BD-RE Blu-ray discs.

Thanks for your prompt reply Aryeh. I have been using Ahampoo Burning Studio for some years now to burn optical disks. The Thinkpad has version 22 whereas the older laptop is on version 21. I have contacted Ashampoo & they said it's unlikely that this was caused by their software & is probably due to removal of the format & erase disk options from a Windows update. My older laptop installed the latest Windows updates overnight & both these options are still there on the context menu. It's all very puzzling but I will persevere. Regards, Geoff

One difference I have noticed - under driver details for the optical there are two drivers whereas the older laptop only has the Microsoft one. The second one is from the Corel corporation. Deleting the Corel driver prevents the drive from working. I have attached a copy of the driver files.
