Odd Hardware Options on ThinkPad W500

2009-03-06, 18:06 PM

Hello -- I have a new ThinkPad W500 with Windows XP ...

Everything seems to be fine and all of the drivers installed correctly.

HOWEVER,

(a) When I log on, I get a message of "New Hardware" for a "PCI Device".

There is no "problematic" PCI Device showing in my Device Manager --

that is, all devices that I think could be considered "PCI" all show up as enabled and working.

Any idea as to what this mysterious "PCI Device" could be?

(b) On My Device Manager, there is a "?" entry for the following device:

"Wireless Intermediate Driver #3".  I have NO clue as to what that could be.

Again, my system (including Wireless -- using the Intel WIFI 5100, I believe) works just fine.

Any ideas as to what this could REFER to??

(c) I have the AT&T Network client as a VPN Dialer.  I noted a "?" entry for the following device:

"AGN Filter Interface #8".  Again, NO clue as to what that could refer to.

Again, the Dialer seems to work just fine.

any ideas as to the above??

Thank you!!

I am not sure if this is part of the same problem -- but my "add/remove" hardware icon has disappeared from the system tray at the bottom.  I do not know how to 'signal' that I wish to stop and remove hardware.  Has this ever happened to anyone else?

The odd thing is that this icon was originally present and seems to have just vanished!

Any comments / suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Well, the most annoying problem has been solved!

It turns out that the Staffer who installed the Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver

(for the SATA Controller) did not finish the job.  THAT was why I was getting prompted on

New Hardware being found!

I went back to the ReadMe and followed the couple fo steps there to specify the location

of the Intel software and the installation completed properly.

I no longer get that annoying prompt AND [as a "bonus"], I can now see the Intel ICH9M-E/M

SATA AHCI Controller....

Also, my "Remove Hardware" icon DOES show up for Storage Devices... It just does not show

up for the CD/ROM drive...

That is a bit strange but does not appear to present any sort of problem..
