Operating systems on W series - please clarify

2008-08-29, 8:03 AM

I'm about to order a W Series notebook (500 or 700), and I noticed under "Operating System", the two XP choices are:

Genuine Windows Vista Business downgrade to Windows XP Professional [$0.00]

Genuine Windows Vista Ultimate with Windows XP Professional Downgrade**** [add $70.00]

My question is: Does either choice mean that 1) the computer will come pre-loaded with XP, and it will include the disk for me to upgrade to Vista Business/Ultimate if I choose to do so later; or 2) the computer will come pre-loaded with XP, with no Vista disk; or 3) the computer will come pre-loaded with Vista Business/Ultimate, and an XP downgrade disk that I'll have to install myself?

Thank you for your help.

So far it has been #3. It comes with Vista installed and XP recovery discs in the box. You have to install XP yourself. In case you would ever want to go back to Vista you need to create a set of Vista recovery discs before installing XP as the recovery discs replace the onboard restore partition, then restore windows from that partition.

This is NOT how it worked for me.

Granted, my unit is a preconfigured model and not CTO, so maybe this changes things.

My unit came with a COA sticker with mention of Vista Biz and a Vista key.  However, it was preloaded with XP Pro and did NOT come with any Vista media whatsoever.  In tabook.pdf my unit is explicitly listed as "XP Pro" though.

Thankfully I don't care, as we have a volume license agreement and I just threw Vista Enterprise x64 on it.  ;)

It looks like they are yet again changing the way they do things.

Well I just received my W500 today.  You're right, ZPrime.  It came already with XP Pro installed, even though the CoA sticker on the bottom says Vista Business with the corresponding key.  Now I'm confused -- Is Vista Business anywhere in the computer??  (like in that hidden partition or something).  For example, if I were to create the discovery disks, would it be XP or Vista Business??

To my Understanding,

When you make a recovery CDs/DVDs, Rescue and Recovery will take an Image(or the Data) in your hard drive, which is XP, and make XP Recovery CDs/DVDs.

Now,

It would be an interesting thing to have something else in the Hidden partition of your laptop (Vista)??????

I might be wrong!!!!!!

The reason I thought it would still come with Vista in whichever form (actual disk or inside the harddrive somewhere), despite my XP downgrade option, is that it actually costs more to get "Vista Ultimate with XP downgrade" than "Vista Business with XP downgrade".  Why else would there be a difference in price if all you get is XP either way.  Not to mention that it is a Vista Business Certificate of Authenticity/Product Key sticker underneath the laptop.

I don't feel the discussion here reached a satisfactory solution yet. I have my W500 shipped downgrade to XP. As others said, it comes with Vista Biz sticker and key, but not Vista software. If some day I want to upgrade to Vista Biz, what would be my option? Thanks for your answer in advance.

huani, I think you have two options: (i) first option is to purchase from lenovo a set of Windows Vista Rescue and recovery discs - but these upon installation would wipe out your main HDD or (ii) purchase separately a Windows Vista upgrade from XP :smileyvery-happy:. Moderators, please correct me if I am wrong.
