Out of the blue, several keys on my P51's internal keyboard stopped working

2021-06-16, 18:05 PM

My laptop was working fine until recently. I was on vacation for 10 days, left my laptop turned on, not asleep for those 10 days. After I returned, several keys on my P51's internal keyboard stopped working.

The keys that stopped working are left shift, capslock, tab, f3, f7, 't', 'y', '[', ']', backspace, and windows keys. On the number pad, the mute button and volume up, '/', and '5' keys also stopped working.

How can I find what the root cause of this is?

My laptop is a P51 (Type 20HH, 20HJ) Laptop (ThinkPad) - Type 20HH

Hello TP-p51,

Greetings

When you left the laptop on, are there any programs running?
Was it connected online?
Have you checked if the machine received any software updates?

Kindly try the recommended keyboard troubleshooting steps here.
Observe and update us how it goes.

There were things running in the background yes - is there any program type in particular that might do something? Laptop was connected to the internet. How can I check if the machine received software updates during that time? One thing I know for sure is it didn't restart. I went through those recommended keyboard troubleshooting steps and nothing worked - the keys don't feel stuck and it's kind of odd that several keys all stopped working at the same time. They don't work in grub (bootloader) terminal or on ubuntu either (I dualboot). Just to clarify I left my laptop on my windows partition during those 10 days I was gone. How can I reinstall my internal keyboard drivers? I think it's a hardware issue but I just want to give this a try.

Before you order a new keyboard, you can try to reseat the header cable to the motherboard. Luckily on P51, all P50 and P51 layouts fit, so a replacement is not to terrible to come by.

Reseating the cable for the keyboard didn't fix anything - is the connection for lighting up the capslock key separate? The capslock key doesn't work but the light for it does (when capslock is on).

Have you tried to run the machine clean boot?
Are the said keys working in BIOS menu?

Let us know what happens

Yes that didn't help, I'll be purchasing a replacement such as https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08S6S6T2Z/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?smid=A245MVQB8SW8Y4&psc=1
