P1 Gen 2 Bios 1.29/1.30 - Constant fan spin under zero load

2020-04-15, 22:19 PM

Hi,

Is there any way to disable the fans from constantly spinning when in Quiet/Balanced power modes and using AC power? The fans do not need to be constantly on.

There is a change on v. 1.29 of the BIOS which says that the 'skin temperature' was improved but all it's done is turn the fans on constantly.

When my laptop is in my lap or anywhere else touching my skin, it's generally unplugged so I don't understand what the rationale behind this change was.

Please change it back or at least provide your customers the option to manage the fans. They should NOT be constantly on when in Quiet or Balanced modes, there's just absolutely no need for them to be.

Thanks.

With 1.30 my fans are spinning up and down, up and down, up and down.  Kinda driving me nuts as I don't recall this behavior on 1.29.

This is the first PC I've owned since 2003 and I have to say, they are just as flaky and buggy in 2020 as they were in 2002.  Shocked that so many big things break with the updates.

I think the change was added in v1.29 but I could be wrong.

Agreed, this shouldn't be happening with a machine that costs thousands of dollars and is supposedly built for businesses and professionals in mind.

I hope they fix this soon.

This occurs to me as well after updating bios to v1,28 (on P1 MT_20MD).

I've noticed that plugging in AC-adapter will turn on fan constantly ignoring temperatures. When plugging out the power the fan will stop spinning and be temperature-dependent again. That lead me to think that it could be a Win10 power setting causing the different fan patterns, but I was not able to create any power plan that could prevent this from occurring.

Even third-party software to throttle down fan speed to zero was unable to stop the fan from spinning while plugged in. Looks like this is a (new) bios hard-coded issue causing fan to constantly spin while plugged in. Agree with OP, this cannot be intentional and hopefully will be fixed soon!

No, I don't think so. It's definitely something they did with the BIOS/ECP update. They seem to have done something similar with the P1 Gen 1 as well.

Bump. Has there been a fix for this issue? Having the same problems on my X1 Extreme Gen 2 (BIOS 1.30).

2nd bump. I just ordered a P1 Gen 2 and am just now becoming aware of this CPU/Fan thermal issue. I didn't read anything about it in the online reviews I read which isn't pleasant.

Any updates or news from Lenovo?

I have just downgraded to BIOS 1.28 to stop the fan at zero load with attached AC adapter. With this older version I have to look for sound stuttering issues and missing keys while typing which I have observed in the past. Then I have to decide which version annoys me at least ;)
