P1 Gen 2: High battery drain in sleep

2019-12-14, 10:52 AM

I'm rather puzzled by my ThinkPad P1 Gen 2's battery drain during sleep. This past evening, I undocked the machine while sleeping from its Thunderbolt dock when the battery was at 90%. When I woke the machine back up around 2.5 hours later, the battery was at 86%. What might be going on? I verified in the system event log that the machine did not wake up during that time. It has 64GB of RAM, but surely the RAM isn't drawing that much power, and nothing else in the system should be active. Thanks.

Anyone else encountering this? My machine most recently drained 20% sleeping for 20.5 hours, which seems crazy. And, predictably, the machine's battery life while awake is not stellar.

Did you figure it out yet? Some tools that may help shed light... command line 'powercfg /sleepstudy' or 'powercfg /batteryreport' or 'powercfg /devicequery wake_armed' or 'powercfg /lastwake'. I also tried 'powercfg /energy' but it seems to always complain, but you can try it. Try in power settings to disconnect network in standby (or just turn wifi off before going in sleep to see). Maybe turn off always on USB if you have that. Do you still have battery drain when you do a windows shutdown?

I have an s740, not the thinkpad but I lose 8% over 24 hours in shutdown. Everyone I tell thinks it's crazy, which it is. Two of them from different manufactured dates have same 8% drain rate. I am debating ordering an X1 Extreme Gen 2 or P1 Gen 2 but if these have battery drain problems also, forget it. Never mind everyone seemingly complaining about lost keypresses and overheating and whatever else.

There is always some power drain when in sleep mode in order to keep the memory state intact, adapters in low power state, etc. By default, the systems are set for Modern Standby Mode in Windows. For no power consumption, you would need to select Hibernate to shut everything down, but will this will preserve the program state upon resume. There is a timer that you can set for hibernate from standby if you desire.

The P1 does not support Instant Go/Connected Standby/Modern Standby/whatever you'd like to call it. It's just powering RAM. My question was because my P1 Gen 2 drains its battery much more rapidly than my Surface Book, which *does* support Instant Go and is still powering the CPU, Wi-Fi radios, etc.

That said, I had a conversation offline with someone not connected to Lenovo but whom I trust, and their back of the napkin calculations sound like that much ECC RAM just uses that much power. Unfortunate, but I suppose that's just how it is - it's not anything Lenovo can do anything about.

@cautiousshopper, I don't believe you should be seeing battery drain when the machine is actually off or hibernated. I don't on my machine. I've also never had my machine overheat.

I have tried to bring this to Lenovo's attention after my machine needed a new motherboard, as I had the same issue as you with the computer not wanting to go into sleep mode correctly. I believe that this issue is primarily the cause of the switchable graphics setup. Whenever the computer is connected to an external monitor, all applications are pushed through the Nvidia graphics versus the intel graphics. While this is normally all well and good, the issue is that the Nvidia graphics use about 7-10 watts of power even at idle, whereas the intel graphics use less than 1 watt.

This means that if your machine is in your backpack and sleeping, the machine could be pushing 15-20 watts of power even at sleep.

LENOVO: Please update your switchable graphics so that the Nvidia graphics will not force background apps and non-intensive apps to the Nvidia card. We own a laptop to be mobile, and many of us use docks so that the laptop can also be used as a desktop replacement,

If the laptop isn't connected to a monitor in a backpack then I don't see why the wattage usage wouldn't be at the lower Intel graphics level.

It seems like a critical factor is the amount of RAM in the system with possibly less RAM being better for extended battery life in this case.

I'm not sure how much having 2 SSDs installed affects it vs only 1.

Because the applications aren't handed off to the other card, and since it defaults ALL applications to the Nvidia card, you use considerably more power.

The only solution is to reboot the machine every time you disconnect from the dock so that the intel card loads system applications and the Nvidia card can sit idle.

What if you simple close all apps prior to closing the lid and going into sleep mode?

Does that work?

I've ordered a P1 Gen2 and haven't received it yet so I'm trying to understand this issue.

It's not "apps" that are the issue. Background tasks and whatnot are running that keep the GPU from going to sleep.
