Re: P1 Gen 2 - Small dots on OLED screen

2020-02-19, 20:30 PM

I'll weigh in here...I've had my P53 for a couple weeks now. I came from a 13.3" 720p screen, so the OLED looks decent, but the pattern is only slightly noticeable to me. What I notice more than a pattern is just fine dots on the screen (mainly on solid colors). The whole reason I ditched the 13.3" 720p was to get away from seeing each pixel hang out by itself. Now I am stuck with a mesh dot matrix of an intergrated touch panel. Maybe it is the constrast of the OLED that makes them stand out?

To be perfectly honest, the color banding and blotchyness on solid colors is equally annoying. I've had to change colors/background in my CAD software and scenes to avoid looking at it. If I wanted blotchy uneven colors I would have stuck with a cheaper edge lit screen. I wish so much I had found this thread before getting the laptop, I would have cancelled my order immediately. According to their return policy we'd be stuck with 15% restocking since they didn't ship "the wrong" product.

Has anyone actually been successful in returning this laptop (no restocking fee) because of the poorly designed combo of OLED/touch panel?

Maybe this video review is an indication of OLED 4K Touchscreen on Lenovo P1 working better than our experiences.  Thought is was interesting to mention "touchscreen layer graininess"  Go to https://youtu.be/1a1BYqqpg5c?t=188

What happened to all the newer posts, they have disappeared. Getting "Post doesn't exist" message now... https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-P-and-W-Series-Mobile/P1-Gen-2-Small-dots-on-OLED-screen/m-p/4653363#M86697

Did anyone find a solution to the dots problem or got a replacement or something?

On Hybrid graphics BIOS, I still cannot reduce brightness. Have to switch to Discrete graphics.

Anyone have an update?  I see they are now talking about the new P1 Gen 3 available next month.  With the work from home situation I haven't had to look at this shat screen since I'm using my 65" 4k TV as a monitor, thankfully.

Maybe somebody who has experienced the grainy dots issue in person could answer my comment on that video.  Is the X pattern crosshatch that i see in almost all the screen review photos as they're loading the issue this thread is about, or is that youtube compressions or camera artifacts? (Annotated screenshot attached) It's very clearly visible to me, so if that's real, it's a deal breaker on what seems otherwise to be an ideal screen!

That pattern is at 45 degrees and the touch wires are not.  I expect what you are showing is something else.  There are some super close and not so close shots spread around here to see.

after reading more in this thread, the diagonal grid lines I saw seem to be exactly the thing people are describing, like that post in the 30s with images of interference patterns between the rgb subpixel layout and the touch later overlay... granted i didn't read the entire thread, but that's what i clearly saw on the video review...

I just got my P1 Gen 3 and I noticed this same issue so I found this thread... Not sure how to go about resolving this. Again, it's only visible on white backgrounds.
