P1 Gen 3 Linux option

2020-08-21, 8:35 AM

It was advertised before that P1 Gen 3 will have 3 kind of Linux options. As I see, Gen 3 is already available but with Win only. Does anyone have more info on that ?

I'm waiting for this as well. I noticed in the PSREF the linux distros are listed as available later. A writer for Forbes who tested Fedora 33 on a P53 claims that Fedora support will be available by August 31, 2020 and that Ubuntu and RHEL will follow shortly afterwards.

See also this post from Mark Pearson who is active on this forum and working on the Linux-support. He wrote that he hoped they could enable the web sales end of august.

Re:P1 Gen 3 Linux option

Hi,

For the P1G3 - it will be available later this year (Ubuntu & Fedora) . It's still being worked so I don't have a date I can share on that one. There is a delay between a platform coming out with Windows and with Linux - that's something we're working on reducing, there are a few technical and resource challenges that need to be resolved.

The X1C8 should be out by Aug 31st (Fedora32 and Ubuntu 20.04) - it's in the very final stages of the web team enabling it. I really hope there aren't any last minute hiccups

The P1G2 and P53 should be out very shortly too (note - Fedora32, not Fedora33).  They are also with the websales team but had a couple of internal hurdles to clear.

There should be a number of Ubuntu platforms out in early September. They're all ready to go and as soon as the X1C8, P1G2 & P53 have been completed the rest will follow. We're still learning the process and where the headaches are.

Hope that helps. I'm really looking forward to being able to post the "systems are available" post.

Mark

Mark,

Thanks for the additional info. Although it is not entirely what I wanted to hear (P1G3 later this year), it is better than being left in the dark.

Now I can make a better decision on which laptop I'm gonna buy, and when.

Am I correct in assuming that the current P1 Gen 3 spec will then eventually be Linux supported? Including WWAN? So if I order one now, I should, in theory, have a fully working Linux system sometime later this year?

Or will there be Linux specific hardware such as trackpoint, touchpad, etc if you opt for a Fedora option?

Hi @ardevd

Linux on the P1G3 - yes (both Ubuntu and Fedora are planned) but WWAN isn't going to be supported. For this years platforms the X1C8 and the X1Yoga5 are having WWAN support added with the Fibocom L860. It's quite the challenge to do it in a supported way (both technically and regulatory). I'm hoping as we get more experience with it (and to be honest a better idea of how popular it is with Linux users) it will help expand the portfolio - but time will tell.

The hardware is the same for both Windows and Linux - we don't do specific HW options for the different OS's.

Mark

The lack of WWAN support is a bit disappointing. It's not the same WWAN modem as in the X1C8 then? The configurator lists it as Fibocom L860-GL for the P1 Gen 3 and Fibocom L850-GL in the X1C8. You mean the L850 will get Linux support while the L860 won't?

Are there any updated about Ubuntu availability? It is already mid October, but I do not see any models with Linux selection.

Hi @ardevd

The X1C8 and the X1Y5 both have the L860 as well - it's the device we are adding support for. The pieces just aren't all in place and then my understanding is it's a regulatory issue (testing and certification needed) with releasing it for multiple platforms. The team wanted to get two platforms done right first, and then see how that goes as it's been a bit of a beast of a project. It's not available yet on those two platforms either - they are still working through some technical issues.

@radzish - Yeah, I know. We do have some more platforms up now on the US site but there are plenty more to come. There are a host of reasons why they're taking a while to go up - some good some just plain stupid (and make me pull my hair out). I'm working on getting the platforms out to other geo's too - it's a whole different battle.

Thanks

Mark
