P1 Gen2 Sample Rate and Bit Depth Options

2021-03-26, 17:55 PM

Hello,

I recently noticed crackling sounds while listening to music and videos.  Upon checking

the Synaptic speaker properties I noticed under the Advanced tab that there are only

two options for the Default Format (16 bit 48000Hz and 24 bit 48000Hz).   I was expecting

to see a much longer list based on other laptops from other folks.

I have tried the P1 drivers as posted by Lenovo (n2oa116w), but the list remains this short.

Is there a way to add more options to this list in order to resolve the sound quality issues?

I have tried each of the two options listed, but the issue remains.

Also, I have noticed that compared to other models, the speaker properties for the P1 Gen2

has few tabs (General, Levels, Advanced, Spatial Sound).   The Enhancements is now a check

box under Advanced.

Thanks

F.

Hello Novis,

Greetings

We only recommend drivers from the Lenovo support site, since it's the guaranteed compatible drivers for the said machine model.

For audio issues, I suggest that you try the troubleshooting steps here:
https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-p-series-laptops/thinkpad-p1-gen-2-type-20qt-20qu/solutions/ht501860-fix-audio-or-sound-problems-in-windows-7-8-10

Update us how it goes

Hello,

Thanks for the reply.

The drivers I used (n2oa116w.exe0 are from the Lenovo site.

Unfortunately, no additional sample rates were added using it.

Hello,

I followed the steps in the link you provided before I started this thread.   No luck with that

information.  As I noted, there were only two options for the sample rate.   Normally there are

more than two.

I attached a screenshot of what I see.  This with the Lenovo drivers installed.

Hello Novis,

Sorry for the late reply.

Kindly uninstall the Synaptic audio driver, put a check mark on the box so that it will be completely deleted from the computer.

Afterwards, go to the support site and then download and install the fresh copy of the said driver.
Restart the machine and check the sound sample rate and bit depth.
Hope this helps

Hello,

I tried that and nothing changed.   The playback sound quality remains poor (crackling) and

there are only two options for the sample rate and bit depth as noted previously.

The Synaptics Audio driver version is 9.0.285.20 (8/11/2020).

I have uninstalled several times with the same results.

I have also noticed that others have the same issue with other Thinkpad models

that have Synaptics drivers.

You can try to compare if the same crackling noise is audible using another external speaker.
3rd party audio software can be an alternative but if the persistent audio issue is only with the internal speaker then we may need to look on the hardware

On my P53 I had a weird audio issue, like It was suddenly using a 8 bit 5 kHz sampling rate after resuming from sleep. However a reboot cleared it out. Have you tried rebooting?

Yep.  I normally shutdown the machine at the end of the day.  Issue persists.   The same streaming

sites (e.g. Youtube video or music streaming) on another Lenovo (T480) has no issues.   The T480

has more sampling rates available.

I would say the issue is with the Synaptics drivers.
